If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. My 2015 5.0 hit 60k miles, and according to my owners manual, you should change the ATF at 60,000 miles if under “severe conditions” (it is VERY hot year round where i live). My transmission shifted perfectly fine before, but I figured id change the fluid and filter as preventative maintenance because why not?

So i went to the dealer and got the pan/filter combo (stupid design Hyundai smh)
The owner’s manual didn’t state how many quarts of atf it takes for just a drop and fill, the parts guy said its about 4-5, so i got 6 quarts of the HYUNDAI genuine ATF SP-IV-RR just in case. (I double checked and this was the correct fluid the owners manual stated).

I lifted my car on level ground, dropped the pan, the fluid in there looked pretty good and had good color, didn’t smell burnt and no metal chunks etc. i put the new pan/filter in, filled it up until it started draining out, started the car and let it warm up 15-20 mins so the ATF could warm up a little and shifted through the gears several times etc then topped it off once more. It took a little less then 4 quarts. Once i was done i let it run a little make sure everything was all good, no leaks etc that was that.

Well, Now my car is shifting weird and is hesitating and jerking when shifting gears. Now I’m worried i somehow f**ked up my transmission and wish i would of just left it alone.

did i miss something? I asked my buddy who is a master tech at hyundai and he said i did it right so I’m not sure what the issue is. He even hooked up one of those fancy ass scan tools the dealers have and looked over all the transmission areas and said nothing looked wrong and there was no codes or faults etc.

Has this happened to anyone else?

edit: I forgot to note that this problem seems worse when the car isn’t fully warmed up

You never drop the Pan. There is a plug that says drain. You are probably low. There is 2 plugs on the bottom of pan one says level one says drain. The is also one tad bit back from range switch which is the fill port. Need to add more fluid there and let it heat up and pull the plug that says level. If no fluid comes out fill it till it does. Then let it heat up some more then when it just drips you are done.

How many miles on the tranny? Just curious.

I had my indy replace the pan/filter + fluid. He got just under 7qts back in there.

One of the problems is that you have to allow the transmission fluid to reach a certain temperature before letting it drain out the check hole. If you done the job incorrectly you may have drained too much transmission fluid or not enough; hence the poor transmission performance.

You have to follow the transmission fill procedure by the book; no estimates or you think it is warm enough.

So I’m not sure if this is coincidental or not, but today i got gas and after i filled up the problem went away completely.

now I’m just confused. I assumed my transmission was the problem because it happened after i changed the fluid, but now I’m not even sure. Maybe i had some water in my gas tank or something, Or maybe the transmission had to recalibrate something or i dont even know.
I’m going to keep driving like normal and see if my problem comes back, ill report back if it does.

I would still follow the transmission check and fill procedure to ensure that you do have the proper fluid amount in your transmission.

Please let us know how it goes over the next couple days. I'm about to have mine drained and filled + replacing the pan/filter. I'm at about 65k and I'm kinda nervous to get this done since it runs fine. I do fall into the severe category though so I feel like it should be done.

What are people's experiences with having a an independent shop do this vs the dealer? Had my car at a local shop today for normal maint and asked if atf changes were common for them and if they felt that they could do it for the genesis. They said they do drain and fills on BMWs/Mercedes all the time and that they feel very comfortable doing it. I'm guessing you could get a bad mechanic at the dealer just as easily than an independent shop?

My car has the A8LR1 transmission and I have drained and filled it twice now (50K km intervals). The first time was with Amsoil and the second time was with the expensive Hyundai SP-IV-RR stuff. Had no issues both times. I followed the service manual for the procedure (well... all except the part of monitoring the trans fluid temperature during refill - which requires the Hyundai GDS tool. I instead used a fluke non-contact thermometer to get an average oil pan temperature).
Although replacing the pan (filter) is pretty straight forward, personally I don't think that it needs to be replaced unless the fluid is very dirty with particles or smells burnt.

I don't plan to replace the trans pan until the 120,000mi service. I have no doubt an independent shop could perform the service, but I'd use only Hyundai/Genesis fluid.

Hey so, car is still running fine. I think it might of just been bad gas. Ill still post an update if something happens. Im still going to double check and make sure the correct amount is in there though.

And to answer your question about the dealer vs independent, generally speaking in my opinion a dealer is probably your best bet if you’re worried about it being done the right way. Yeah both can f$%k you over, but my worry with independent shops is they might use the wrong fluid in the trans such as a “universal atf” or something, which isn’t going to be the same.

Transmissions are very complex machines, and me personally i would ONLY use the exact fluid that the owners manual recommend. if you just wanted to have a tire pressure sensor replaced or something, then thats a different story. But transmission work?
Id just bite the bullet and have the dealer do it and not risk it with an independent shop, or do it yourself.

Had my independent tranny specialist
Change and replace the pan, and fill up, changed mine at 110,000 ,kms
Fluid was dirty, drove well before and drives like charm after,
Currently at 138, 000 kms,

I believe the manual states (correct me if I'm wrong) fluid and filter change every 60,000 miles or every 5 years, whichever comes first. Seeing as how the filter is part of the pan you have to change the pan. No getting around it.
