2015 Engine Needs Replacing at 163k miles?

They didn’t mention anything like that. It’s more of a ticking than a knocking, if that matters.

Did they say (do they know) if it was from the top end or the bottom end of the engine? If the top end, it could just be a tappet worn a little out of adjustment. If it is that, then nothing else will ever happen, it will just keep ticking.

I'm not entirely sure, but based on the list of possible things creating the sound, I'm assuming the sound is not on top. If you didn't see their description I copied in a previous message, here it is...

"Loose rod bearing" would imply bottom end, but "burnt valve" would imply top end, and "timing chain" could be either. So, maybe they didn't actually determine if it was top or bottom? If so, did they even eliminate the high pressure pump or something on the accessory drive? Seems like a lot of guessing here to me...

I got a 3rd estimate this morning. The Service Manager drove with me a bit and said I definitely don't need a new engine. It's performing fine with no alerts. He pulled the codes on it, and there was nothing that indicated an engine problem. He said the engine could go on for quite a bit longer, and if the ticking doesn't bother me (and it doesn't), just live with it.

He found the rear differential seal was bad, just like the dealer said. I didn't tell him in advance because this was a test to see if it really was bad, and it must be since they both found that problem. The 2nd opinion mechanic did not find it. It is hard to find competent, honest repair people. I'm feeling pretty good now. I'm going to keep driving, and I think I've found a new mechanic.

I wonder if the dealer that started this knew it was nothing, and this was just to try and push you into buying a car from him.

hey btw Blackstone does oil analysis order one up so the next time you do a oil change you can send it in. Itll give you some idea of your engines health.

In your case, it may be worth bringing to an independent shop and have the valve clearance adjusted and spark plugs replaced.

I really doubt that it would ever by worth the cost for the clearance adjustment. It's not trivial to do at all. The cams have to be removed to do it. I'd just let it click a little bit.

Several people have said that. No offense to Hyundai owners, but this was a Hyundai dealership (since the 2015 Genesis models were under Hyundai back then). Surely they would be smart enough to recognize that I'm driving a Genesis that I have maintained perfectly for 8 years. Why wouldn't I go to the Genesis dealership and buy another instead of buying one of their Hyundais? If that was their tactic, it failed, and it just about turned me off from even buying another Genesis in the future.
