  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Thought I would go ahead and leave an status update regarding my car. After several attempts with my dealer to repair my car and still breaking down. I had got BBB AUTO LINE involved to start my case up with them and HMA is buying back my car. The dealer and HMA has been very good. But I feel it’s unfair to make payments on something and not getting the service out of it. I bought this car brand new with 545 miles on it and I have almost 39,000 miles on it now.

1st issue - 1/10/17 drove home from work approxiately 18 miles from where I live. Gotten off major interstate highway here in Dallas, TX. About 5 mins later it all of my dash warning lights come on and my car shuts down no any warning!! Had to call roadside assistance for the tow to the dealer. Dealer replaced fuse junction box, PCM and harness. Get car back 14 days later on 1/25/17 runs okay.

2nd issue - 1/30/17 About 5 mins from home all the dash warning lights come on again, steering got really tight. But, this time the car didn’t shutdown as I able to get it into a neighborhood gas station. Made a call to the roadside and tow it back to the dealer and stated that it had a couple bent pins on the wiring harness so that repair was done. Get car back on 2/2/17 (3 days later)

3rd issue - 2/18/17 Dash warning lights were flashing very erratically for about 10 mins and stopped. Me and a family drive on the highway doing 70mph everything running good and 1 min later all the gauges stopped working and the odometer did as well. Steering got very tight on me. Very scary!! Actually have videos of this situation..... Was told that the electrical glitch was caused by wiring harness in the sunroof. Parts had to be ordered for this repair so it took some time. Got car back on 3/17/17 (27 days later)

4th issue - 4/3/17 Car ran good until this day. Finally was gonna put this car on the highway for the first time since February and low and behold that didn’t happen! Car surges out on me and power comes right back on, trans go into a limp mode stayed in 1st gear until the car got to over 5000 rpm and it jerked very hard in the next gear. Creeped the car back home and called the roadside assistance and they sent the tow truck to my house to tow back to the dealer and it’s currently at the dealer now. I haven’t ask what is wrong with it now and at this point wont’t want to know.....

This is my 2nd Genny. I had a 2013 Genny and it was spot on. But the newer ones (2015 and up) seems to has some issues for sure. I like Hyundai products. I have received real good service from my dealer and the Hyundai Consumer Affairs with the buyback process I had considered getting a new G80 or maybe step up to the G90. But now I’m a little of nervous about Hyundai/Genesis vehicles now since I never went through this with a car that I bought new. I may look into the new Lincoln Continental but I have to research those 30 way Perfect Position Seats they are offering since they use 40% less foam on them. Or something that is in the Genesis league......

Several people have reported loss of power, either during startup, or (like you) when the car was operating. Based on what other members said, it may be related to a bad grounding situation somewhere in the car wiring, where a ground point was mistakenly painted, or is loose. In the case of the Genesis, with electrical steering (instead of hydrallic) that can be a big safety issue. The car shutting off during operation is also a safety issue.

Anyone having a safety issue on any car should file a complaint with the NHTSA. It only takes a couple of minutes:

From the several posts I read about this issue, although it's a small sample size, seems to predominately affect ultimate trims. Has anyone experienced this with either the base, signature, and maybe tech trims?

I have to say it was a very scary situation on the highway. Especially when the 3rd issue occurred. Definitely something needs to be looked into for sure.

Is the decision to repurchase made by HMA, the dealer, or both? Was any arm twisting required by the state or any other agency? What dealer did you buy from?

Thanks

A dealer is not going to repurchase a car. It would have to be HMA working through a dealer. The reverse would be true if it were a used car.

Without knowing the details of this situation, HMA knows that Lemon Laws exist in every state (terms vary by state), so they know that threat hangs over their heads if the Lemon Law could be applied in that situation (based on number of days in the shop, out of service, etc). Lemon Laws generally only applies to new cars.

So you have had your 2015 Genesis long enough to put 39,000 miles on it and you had no problems until these repeated issues in 2017? How does the repurchase work? Do you get the blue book value for a 2015 Genesis with 39,000 miles? Sorry you have had these issues. I love my 2015 V8 Ultimate, but only have 23,000 miles on it ... bought July 2015, so almost 3 years old. Regards, Dan

When they repurchased my Sonata they started with the total amount paid then deducted off mileage. Depending on what mileage they use either when the issue first started or the final issue when they decided to take the car back you could be looking at getting almost all of your money back. But if they deduct the 39000 miles your looking at taking a pretty good hit. I don't remember the exact site but I want to say they used a BBB or KBB standard mileage deduction for manufacture buybacks in IL. Lemon Law is completely different but most states you have to do that in the 1st year of issues and ownership. And everything is done via HMA they dealer can only confirm you issues and can't start the process.
