If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Howdy,

I am experiencing the issue described below with my 2015 Genesis. A little background: I live in Texas, and temperatures have been about 10F to about 45F the past couple weeks with a couple of warm days of 50F to 65F. I had an oil change 10 days ago prior to the issue starting as I was visiting a different city then drove 350 miles back home right after the oil change with no issue whatsoever, temps that way were a little warmer about 50F-55F.

The Oil pressure light has been coming on soon after starting my car, and it remains on during my drive until I am at 1.7k+ RPMs on really cold days (10F-35F), or on slightly warmer weather(35F-45F) it will turn on during idle (coming to a stop or at start) and turn off immediately while accelerating. On the warmer days that we experienced in Texas the light never came on.

I have frequently checked my oil levels right before and after every drive, and it's right at the Full mark. Additionally, I have looked online and am aware of the common issue of the Oil pressure switch unit failing issue that Genesis has, but I am unsure if this is actually my issue and not just an issue due to the extreme cold weather. The oil used (5W-30 Quakerstate Fully Synthetic), but I am unsure which brand oil filter was used as I got it changed at a local small quick oil change mechanic.

I am of 2 minds right now prior to taking on replacing the sensor due to the amount of work it would require.
- Would it be possible that the oil filter used was just not the recommended type and is causing the oil pressure to fluctuate? And, should I attempt another oil change and replace it with the recommended filter at my usual oil change place? Perhaps use 0W-30 oil as well?
- Should I continue to drive as I have been for the last 10 days with no issues and wait to see what happens in warmer weather?

The last resort would be to replace the Oil Pressure sender unit which I want to do when warmer weather hits. My worry really is that the oil pump is being starved or clogged.

Please share your experiences or knowledge on the matter, I would appreciate any input.

I have had the same problem for the past year. I asked the Hyundai service people and he said it is pretty common problem. In his years working there he has only replaced one oil pump. I am gambling on it being a faulty sensor. I watch the temp gauge and if it were to go up quickly then I would suspect a oil pressure problem. Oils are made to be viscous through a large range of temps.

Well given that I have been driving the car for a few weeks and 500+ miles with the light going on and off I am hopeful it is the sensor, do you know what all gaskets I would need to replace when I replace the sensor?

2015 gen. 3.8 My oil light will come on when car has warmed up and at idle 500 to 750 rpm anytime rpm increases just past 750 light goes off could this be the oil sensor? Am I hurting the engine by driving? Any Insite would be appreciated thanks.

There is a plug in the oil filter housing that you can remove and put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on to verify pressure.
I don't know the specific gaskets. The whole intake (upper and lower) has to come out, and both fuel rails with all the injectors have to be removed after that. You will almost certainly need new o-rings for the injectors. I have heard the seals are difficult to install without a particular tool. Sometimes, an injector breaks on the way out.

Youtube has some videos showing the replacement.

Oh I didn’t know, I thought the only way to test the oil pressure was through the oil pressure sensor port in the V of the engine… I might just test that then lol… there wasn’t much information on this online

I was looking at photos of the housing online and can’t seem to find photos of the port. Do you happen to know where the port is exactly?

It's shown in this video.

Interesting, I think that was added on the newer 2017+ G2 models. The 2015-2016 have a different housing without the port… I’ll have to double check tomorrow though. I wonder if they added the port to the housing after the refresh due to the issues those sensors were having haha

If you really wanted to, it seems like you could buy an extra end cap for the filter housing and maybe drill and tap it to be able to screw in a pressure gauge to test with. I don't think it's really worth all that. It seems like it is always the sensor. I also wonder if the housing from a 2018 would fit.
