Howdy,
I am experiencing the issue described below with my 2015 Genesis. A little background: I live in Texas, and temperatures have been about 10F to about 45F the past couple weeks with a couple of warm days of 50F to 65F. I had an oil change 10 days ago prior to the issue starting as I was visiting a different city then drove 350 miles back home right after the oil change with no issue whatsoever, temps that way were a little warmer about 50F-55F.
The Oil pressure light has been coming on soon after starting my car, and it remains on during my drive until I am at 1.7k+ RPMs on really cold days (10F-35F), or on slightly warmer weather(35F-45F) it will turn on during idle (coming to a stop or at start) and turn off immediately while accelerating. On the warmer days that we experienced in Texas the light never came on.
I have frequently checked my oil levels right before and after every drive, and it's right at the Full mark. Additionally, I have looked online and am aware of the common issue of the Oil pressure switch unit failing issue that Genesis has, but I am unsure if this is actually my issue and not just an issue due to the extreme cold weather. The oil used (5W-30 Quakerstate Fully Synthetic), but I am unsure which brand oil filter was used as I got it changed at a local small quick oil change mechanic.
I am of 2 minds right now prior to taking on replacing the sensor due to the amount of work it would require.
- Would it be possible that the oil filter used was just not the recommended type and is causing the oil pressure to fluctuate? And, should I attempt another oil change and replace it with the recommended filter at my usual oil change place? Perhaps use 0W-30 oil as well?
- Should I continue to drive as I have been for the last 10 days with no issues and wait to see what happens in warmer weather?
The last resort would be to replace the Oil Pressure sender unit which I want to do when warmer weather hits. My worry really is that the oil pump is being starved or clogged.
Please share your experiences or knowledge on the matter, I would appreciate any input.
