I have a 2015 Hyundai Genesis 6cyl 3.8 Sedan, not Coupe. I was changing the Battery yesterday, which is located in the Trunk. I disconnected the battery terminals, took out the old battery, then put in the new battery. Since it was dark out already, and this battery has 3 additional accessory wires and the main Positive Lead, I decided to wait until the morning at daylight to finish up and connect the new battery to the wiring terminals. I made a bonehead move and closed the trunk!
Since there is no Power to the car, the trunk won't unlock so I can connect the battery. The key that is in the FOB will not turn the trunks keyhole lock to manually unlock it. The key did work to manually unlock the driver-side door so I can get into the car, but since there is no power, the trunk release button won't work.
I called AAA, they connected up to a positive power connection located in the engine compartment, which did illuminate and power up the car's cluster, but nothing else in the car will work. Power anything, like door locks, windows, etc will not work, including the trunk release. The only thing that will work is listening to the radio and the center cluster illuminating. Going through the backseat trunk compartment access isn't big enough for an adult or small child to squeeze through. Both myself and AAA did not visually see an emergency trunk release that is supposed to be located in the trunks lid to release it.
I called the dealership and they told me to contact a Locksmith. The locksmith said that since the physical key won't turn in the trunks key hole, it's likely that the the lock cylinder's are likely seized up from non-use. The Locksmith said the only option is to drilling out the lock.
Does anyone have any ideas of what else to do, other than drilling out the lock? I'll drill it out if I need to. If Drilling it out is the only other option to getting the trunk to open, what size drill bit would be needed to accomplish this? I've drilled out household door handles and locks before, so I'm familiar with how to do it, but I would imagine with drilling out a car lock may be a slightly different method to accomplish. I feel like I'm out of options at this point since the Dealership and Locksmith are unable to help. I have a literal 2ton brick on my hands unable to figure out what else to do since the dealership and locksmith are unable to help.
