List ya options for exhaust. Want it to rubble but not too loud. Need some ideas.
I actually just went down this rabbit-hole for an exhaust for my 2016 Genesis Sedan 3.8L last week.
Wanted just a bit more tone and little rumble but nothing too loud. I also didn't want something that would ever make Police think twice.
CA laws on emissions and
mods are pretty strict and I never want to worry about getting pulled over for something like that.
There are a lot of videos out there of people doing muffler deletes, CAT deletes, etc... Those were louder than I wanted.
Exhaust noise level and tones are all very subjective which I am aware of, these are all just my personal preferences.
I prefer a cars noise level to be in conjunction with the cars power/performance.
My Genesis has "0" engine upgrades or tuning and I don't plan to ever do them. While the 3.8L V6 is no slouch, it certainly isn't a beast either, especially not on the G80 which is a BOAT.
This is my daily, comfortable, luxury car that I just want to purr a little for me.
I wanted a lower tone rumble more than a higher pitched ricey sound and absolutely didn't want rasp.
My other largest concern was exhaust "Drone" at cruising speeds (audible low tone in cabin at certain RPMs). This is a luxury car after all and I enjoy the "mostly" quiet cabin.
I first replaced the stock mufflers with
2.25" Magnaflow Oval Center/Offset Muffler (Part #11225)
With just this on, the car will drone pretty bad between 2000RPM - 2600RPM.
It was also a bit louder than what I was looking for. Those stock mufflers that come on the car reduce a LOT of noise.
Unfortunately with my driving style and the way the car shifts, it's in that RPM range 50%-75% of the time.
I then ordered the (Oval NOT Bottle Style)
2.25" Vibrant Performance Ultra Quiet Resonators (Part #1140)
I added those in between the MagnaFlows & the stock "H" resonator which I left in place.
GAME CHANGER
The Vibrants are a tight fit and had to put them right up next to the stock "H" resonator to get them to fit. They do hang about 1/8"-1/4" lower than the undercarriage but it's such a small amount that you can't see it when behind the car and it doesn't affect the clearance of the vehicle either.
(MY CAR IS NOT LOWERED).
The Vibrants made a big difference to the drone. There is still a slight drone but it's so minimal that I don't really notice it. I pay more attention to the ****ing step-child of a sunroof's rattle noise over small bumps than the drone but that's a whole different rabbit-hole.
This thing now purrs at lower RPMs and gets slightly more aggressive at the higher RPM's. It isn't too loud or obnoxious and is just what I was personally looking for.
I'm getting the trunk Dynomatted this week to make sure my new sub install isn't going to rattle the back of the car and I'm sure that will very slightly reduce the drone tone as well as it's easy to tell that the drone is coming from the rear.
My Cost breakdown:
(2) MagnaFlow 11225 2.25" - $210
(2) Vibrant 1140 2.25" - $240
Labor 1st trip - $160
Labor 2nd trip - $140
Total - $750
I'll take some videos tonight so you can hear the sound levels and with post them so you can see/hear.
Hope this helps.
