  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2015 Hyundai Genesis 5.0L - are cam phasers the problem or oil control valves? Huge expense.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Engine had misfire issues under heavy acceleration. Issue appeared suddenly and the engine sounded like it had an exhaust leak.

Next day, cleared codes and engine would run ok under gentle loads. Hit the accel and the issue would reappear.

Next day, decided to bring the car to my house to take a look. On the way to my house to diagnose, the engine would die and had to restart multiple times. Eventually the car died on the side of the road and was towed to the dealer. Majority of the misfired were cyl 2, 4, 6, 8.

I did mention to the service team that I had read about the Oil Control Valves and/or a blocked catalytic converter causing misfires. Maybe?

Head tech diagnosed the issue to likely be the Cam Phasers. Recommended repair is over $12,000 with parts about $5-6k of that. New timing chains, phasers, etc etc etc.

I have seen Ford videos with similar issues and the tech was easily able to adjust timing through the scan tool to demonstrate that the phaser was failing.

If oil control valves were the issue would a tech be able to detect that it was the valve and not the phaser?

Anyone here have similar experience with a fix?

I'm tempted to do the repair myself (I am probably an advanced diy but not a pro). Any advice or warnings?

Thank you!

The symptoms for failed/failing oil control valves are not as drastic as the ones you are having. I suspect the cam phaser diagnosis is correct.
If you want to check to make sure it's not clogged cats yourself, just remove the two front O2 sensors. It should run much better with them removed if the cats are clogged.
