Has anyone had their car just flip out? Every alert flashes up. Loses power steering. Lights don’t work. Blinkers don’t work. Camera doesn’t work. Trunk won’t open. This is the third time in 20 months that it has happened. The service department is always awesome but they have no idea what’s wrong with it. Last time they brought in a specialist and he couldn’t figure it out either.
Anyone else? Or is my car just possessed?

Hasn't happened to me. Please provide more details - when does it happen, how long it lasts, etc.

There’s no rhyme or reason. The last time it happened was in March. I have a video of the warnings it pops up but I don’t know how to post it on here. It’s not drivable when it happens so it lasts until they fix it 🤷🏻‍♀️ We went to the car last night to grab my jacket I forgot in there and pressed the fob to unlock the doors and it wouldn’t work. So it was here we go again...the car starts but with the lights, blinkers and power steering not working they prefer to tow it rather than drive it.

Just for the heck of it check to see if the switch in the dash fuse panel is solidly in the on position.

I’ll pass that along. On Monday a Technician specialist from Genesis is going to go to the dealership where our car was towed to. Last time it happened he came to look at it and couldn’t figure it out. He told them if it happened again to not touch it until he could see it. They tried everything they could think of to fix it before they reached out last time. Service department has been great. It’s just a mystery to all of them. I’ll keep you posted once I get any additional information. Thanks for the feedback!

Update: the specialist managed to clear everything so he determined the car was fixed and passed inspection. He doesn’t know what was wrong, why it happened, how he fixed it or if/when it will happen again. His theory is that it could be the security system the car dealership sold us. It’s called ZAZ GPS. They unhooked it.
The representative from Genesis called today and they are closing our case and said if we don’t like the results then we could contact the Better Business Bureau. I’m shocked that they even suggested that.
Anyway, I don’t know where it goes from here. We don’t trust the car to take off driving it a distance and that’s just disappointing.

Sorry to hear all this.

If I had this issue and the tech couldn't tell me what was the cause and/or what action they took to resolve it, I'd be furious and would demand more. What's worse is the comment from Genesis basically telling you to get lost and/or good luck complaining to the BBB, since Genesis won't take any further contact on this issue.

These are not simply issue-resolution decisions, these are brand management/representation decisions----and they're doing a poor job.

Really makes me question my plan to buy one of these.

That was my thought exactly. We didn’t even bring it to the attention to Genesis until after the third time so it’s not like we are complainers. We just thought it was a bug that needed worked out of a new car. Now we don’t think that we feel like there is an issue. And as a company trying to build a new brand this is bad form. But we are just one person it’s not like we have any clout of pull. So it is what it is.

I've been in and managed customer service, sales, and brand management for decades. I would never think of telling a customer with a legit question or complaint that we have no idea what to do and if they don't like it to contact the BBB. If any of my reps suggested that the customer do that, I'd fire them.

There are many times when the solution to an is elusive. Still, all customers appreciate honesty and integrity rather than being told to get lost.

It is a lose-lose situation. What exactly should they have told you? I have much experience with computers and electronically controlled machines that seemed to fix themselves for no good known reason. They screw up, you tinker, you probe, it starts working and you have no idea what the problem was. Power surge? Low voltage?

Now if I was the tech and you did not seem to accept my answer I'd make up a BS story of what I cleaned, reconnected, aligned, tightened. You'd be satisfied and I could charge you more. I've done things just like that and made customers happy. Perception. Many people are not happy unless they pay more.

Agree is sounds like Genesis customer service could have handled it better, but what would you want them to do? If the dealer Tech has no idea, I doubt the CS rep does. I did not hear the conversation so I don't know what should have been different but you always want the customer to feel you did the best for them.
What I want is to be able to walk towards my car and not be worried about whether or not I’m going to be able to drive it today or not. I didn’t buy a 15 year old used car. There is clearly an issue.

Oh, I understand that. What is the issue? How can it be resolved? You can only fix what you find broken. Of course you want the confidence that you get in the car, it starts, it goes. Was it the ZAZ GPS? Perhaps, but they were unable to prove it and it has not occurred since. They were smart enough to eliminate one possible problem source.

Car is running properly as of now.
No other problems found. Issue is gone as far as they can tell.

What else can they do? What is the next step?
I would think they would want to find the issue as much as we want it found. They did disconnect the Zaz and it has not occurred in the five miles I’ve driven it since. I’m not sure that’s the standard most of us would want when driving a “luxury” car. The car dealership is working on a resolution because they said we aren’t getting what we are paying for. What would make us happy? Certainly not another Genesis. We actually love the car we have and want the confidence that it’s reliable. It broke down the day before one of my husbands chemo treatment last year; that was fun. I’m sure that caused a lot of “what if’s” and emotions in the situation. Sure it could happen to any car but that doesn’t make it okay. I’d be happy to let them keep the car for as long as it takes to find the issue. As far as they are concerned it’s fixed. I’ve heard that three times now, hence, my hesitation to believe it AND the specialist they flew in to look at it said “if it happens again just tell them to bring it back”. That’s reassuring.

I certainly understand wanting the confidence it will work. We all expect that.

The dealer has a pretty sophisticated diagnostic computer they hook up to your car. The computer says everything is OK. A tech looked at it and drove it. Battery connections looked at and are OK. Car worked perfectly. They disconnected an aftermarket electronic system. They may well be the cause of the problem but they were unable to prove it.

If everything is working perfectly it is just not possible to find a problem. Just like every time I open the refrigerator door the light goes on you want the car to start and go. It is doing that. What else can they do?

I did look up the ZAZ GPS and I agree with Genesis that it may cause problems. It can get into too many parts of the electronics and if something goes wrong, create problems. Removing it would increase my confidence level considerably. If you paid for it, get your money back.

Only thing you can do now is to use the car. Take your husband to lunch, go out for a coffee, take a ride by the lake. If it keeps going you will build confidence.
All good in theory. Last time it happened was in March. So been there and done that.

I'm guessing they tested the battery already? I am no mechanic, but to me it sounds like a power issue. Computers do weird things when they don't get the power that they need. That's not to say there is no power, but that the amount of power is not right.

This is why most mechanics would just replace some random part and blame that as the issue. I mean, you hear it all the time.

Unfortunately sometimes there's just nothing they can realistically do. I'm not a mechanic but I'm a physician and I encounter very similar issues. A patient comes in with something that scares/bothers him very much, we do a bunch of tests and can't find what's wrong, and it goes away on its own. What can I do about that? All I can offer is our best educated guess, but there is no definitive answer.

With that said, it sure sounds like an electrical issue, and the intermittent nature sounds like a connection issue. Is there another dealership or mechanic you can go to have it checked out? A second opinion can help.
