  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I turned in a 2015 g80 ultimate for this car and right away I noticed this car produces a higher level of road noise, to a point where it's hard to enjoy music unless volume is tuned up high so as to drown out the noise.
Spoke with the dealer and with Hyundai headquarters. Even had the dealer take a road test with me. He agreed there was a lot of road noise but said Hyundai would not do anything to please me unless they recall the Continentals on all Genesis
Guess there is nothing I can do about it but just warning potential buyers to do a through test drive and listen closely for various noises interrupting your luxury ride.
I replaced the tires with Michelin's as too many owners were having too many blowouts due to weak sidewalls on the continentals, The Michelin's did not improve the road noise problem much however and cost me a thousand dollars but I'm almost 80 years old and do not want to be fixing flat tires from weak sidewalls.

Replacing the tires because of the sidewall issues and avoiding the emergency hassle is a good idea.

Going from my 2015 Genesis 3.8 to the 2018 G80 Sport, I have the opposite experience - the car is much quieter.

Are you using the original continentals on your g80 sport. If so, be careful. Read the reviews on tire rack web site and other reviews.

what kind of road noise?

my g80 is very quiet when the windows are up and the sun roof closed.. I do notice a buffeting sound if just the sunroof is open, but this is true in any vehicle with a sunroof, cracking the rear windows negates this buffeting sound.

Of course in Sport mode there is a significant increase in exhaust "noise" as the exhaust sound is pumped through the speakers artificially, and this can be turned off in the cluster settings.

But insofar as tire noise, nope I have no issues with that, I had a lot more in my Lexus, and frankly I am very surprised and impressed with how quiet the G80 is compared to how the Lexus was..

I had a 2016 Genesis base with Michelin tires. It was noisy on some roads and quiet on new asphalt. I traded it in for a 2018 G80 base that had the exact same tires as the 2016. It is a different car as far as road noise. It still is noisy on some really rough roads but I found if I set the tire pressure to 32 to 33 psi cold they are better. Higher pressure of 38 psi or more is very noisy and rides rough.
It doesn't surprise me that the G80 Sport is more noisy than the Ultimate.
You could try lowering the tire pressure. I found that the dealers tend to increase the pressure for some reason. Both if my cars had 44psi when I got them.
I am right behind you at 75 .

G80 Ultimate 5.0, not a problem with the Continentals, smooth as glass and really quiet especially at 40 psi. Check the tires max psi and take the weight of the G80 in consideration. They should be inflated to around 40-45 psi under normal operating temps. This is why your Hyundai dealer inflated them to this psi.

Sidewalls are quite flexible on any modern tire. Taking in consideration the weight of the G80, inflating tires to 32-33 psi will expose more sidewall due to flexing and squating. Add in to higher speeds, tighter corners and higher operating temps, your asking for sidewall separation. Of course if you hit a chuckhole, you're also asking for wheel damage. Why because the side wall stiffness has been compromised by under inflation.

Think about it this way. A 45-40 series tire has less sidewall profile. When you under inflate the tire, it causes the sidewall to squat, exposing more sidewall to road damage. Now bring the tire up to operating temps, the rubber becomes a bit more flexible. Add in higher speeds, on straights and curves, plus the aerodynamic down force and weigh of the car, adds more friction against the road surface and voila. You're asking for damage to sidewalls. Hit any sharp object on the compromised sidewall and "BOOM" you got a blowout. It's pretty simple.

Those who choose to run the Continentals or any tire for that matter on the G80, simply need to inflate them to 40-45 psi cold and no more problems. Michelin has no thicker sidewall then the comparable Continental. Some of you think it's the tire itself but in reality, it's operator malfunction. People don't generally check their tire pressures nearly as much as they are directed and just take it on faith. You should check and adjust them as needed weekly. Especially in higher temperatures and humid climates. Dryer less humid climates every two weeks.

One other thing; the tire pressures in the door frame are just a standardized guide for most autos. Genesis I believe, has found out it's best to run the tires on the G80 at no less than 40 psi. They might not be coming right out and saying or making it obvious, however I believe they've come to the same conclusions.

Tire manufactures have spoken about this time and time again. Especially with the lower profile road tires.

Happy Motoring!

40psi at operating temps, in most environments is 36-38 psi cold.

I keep my tires @ 38psi cold during the fall and winter, and 36psi cold during spring and summer on all my cars, after 10 minutes or so of driving the TPMS shows 40-41psi.

38psi right now when it is 100° plus in Socal puts the tires around 44psi on the highway, which is way too much and creates issues like a bouncy ride, excess tire wear, slick cornering, and reduced MPG.

But 36psi cold in 40°-50° winter temps and the tires never get to or even past 38psi on the highway.. Which again leads to issues, most notably reduced MPG.

I'd say though, on average most people don't notice or care, I see people driving with seriously under inflated tires and I mention it to them and 9:10 shrug it off. It really amazes me, especially people in higher end expensive cars.

I notice when my tires are even slightly off, the cars handling is different, and I can see my MPG get reduced. But then I track MPG per tank, hell I still get out of my car and manually check tires, oil, wiper fluid, etc every time I fuel up.. It's how I was taught, and I've never changed my habits, and since I also drive a few old ass cars with real gauges and no amenities like TPMS, or idiot lights, I kind of have to remember to check things.

Yes this is very true. I generally stop beside someone that has a low tire and let them know. I grew up not having way TPMS or other warning lights on cars. It's best not to depend upon them but to depend upon your own ability to check them regularly.

I agree, my wife has 2017 Lexus RX350, my 2018 Sport Ultimate is MUCH quieter.
