  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My G80 keeps telling me several times per day that my hands are not on the steering wheel, when in fact my hands are on the wheel!
Very annoying!

The steering wheel senses tiny movement and if it sees none you get the message. A few people had a similar complaint but I'm not sure if there was a definite resolution. Talk to your dealer about it.

Mine does it, too. I turned it off.

My hands on steering wheel warning works just fine in my 2019 G80 3.8L AWD. I get the warning only when I take my hands off the wheel for more than 5 seconds.

I read in another thread you've had your car three weeks, have you had a chance to take the car on a road trip? The issue only happens to me occasionally, on a straight road. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, it's enough to startle my wife (passenger) to the point of me seeing the need to turn it off. Hopefully your 2019 doesn't have the issue. I have the same year, it's the base model, but not AWD like yours, and mine does.

I have taken the G80 on two road trips so far exceeding 200 miles each.

I'm glad you confirmed your warning system doesn't go off prematurely. Maybe the dealer can fix mine. Thanks for confirming.

The system isn't tactile, but rather it is based on detecting if the steering wheel has been manually rotated even a fraction of a degree within some period of time. I've had it alert on me when driving on long straight highways, even after only a couple minutes since the last alert. A tiny manual movement of the steering wheel is enough to stop the alert, and also to prevent future alerts (apart from turning it off altogether, which defeats the purpose of that feature in the first place).

My gripe with this feature is that it's poorly named, but also implemented based on a faulty assumption. My hands never leave the steering wheel (at least not both at the same time), so technically I'm never tripping the namesake. However, the design assumption by Genesis seems to be that "all roads are bendy and require manual input, so trigger an alert if no steering is occurring". The Genesis/Hyundai engineers have obviously never been on a Midwestern US highway.

Agreed! Combine excellent car alignment with a newly paved Texas highway and mine was beeping at me all the time. I had to turn it off.

You say the feature is poorly named - What feature are we talking about? The LKA lane keeping feature?

The alert for "Keep hands on steering wheel", which actually isn't based on your hands at all, but triggers if the steering wheel hasn't been moved in X amount of time. It's actually quite easy to trip that alert on the long, flat, straight highways prevalent throughout the midwestern US. If there's no need to steer, that doesn't mean my hands aren't still firmly attached to the steering wheel. Thus, a poorly named & implemented alert.

LKA on the other hand works fairly well. It gets confused during rainy weather, especially at night where it senses the reflection off of wet pavement where road crack sealant is applied and thinks that the sealant is the lane marker, but usually it's pretty good.

I drive long straight roads all the time. SD has a lot of them no reason to adj the steering wheel type roads, and I never get the warning. Maybe the newer G80s are more sensitive? I can see where that could get annoying.

I think this thread is centered around the LDW - lane departure warning - feature, discussed at page 5-101 of the owner's manual - although nobody references it as such..

In any case, I have had three autos with many such features, and my first task after purchase has been to go thru the settings menu and disable everything of dubious utility.

I find LDW/ LKA system very useful on long drives. After 12 hours of driving and you tire out is when I find it very useful. I wish some of my other vehicles had that option.

The "keep your hands on the steering wheel" feature is part of the (LKA) Lane Keeping Assist system.

The way it's worded in the manual it appears to be controlled by touch and not by steering wheel movement. See box in the upper right of attachment. But I suspect in reality it is controlled by movement.

Keep on reading - the "keep your hands on" feature is also part of the LDW system - Lane departure warning" -- See page 5-101.

The difference between LKA and LDW is that LDW is a more passive approach - you get the warning - but the vehicle will not try to actively steer you back into your lane. It just nags you.

Definitely movement. I've played with it for many miles a few times. It does not matter what moves the wheel, it just has to move slightly on occasion. Does no matter where you touch it or what you touch it with, it has to move ever so slightly.

I don't know if it can be adjusted or if I happen to be jumpy, but in 70,000 miles in two cars, it only went of once with hands on wheel.

Unbelievable!

Yes! I have the same issue, as does my husband. Very very annoying! I want find out how to turn it off!!! I’ve considered trading the car in.

My 2019 G80 Sport keeps telling me and my husband that our hands are not on the steering wheel, when, in fact, they are. It’s very very annoying. This feature keeps us from enjoying driving the car, which we purchased earlier this year. It’s so annoying I’m considering trading the car on a purchase of a different make. How can I disengage this feature???
