  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Well we put about 2500 miles on the car in the first week. we left maine, went down to NYC for a night then over to western Pennsylvania. So we hit it all, single lane back roads, and monster 10 lane super roads. Traffic, open interstate, pot holes, new construction, old dilapidated roads, etc…

My highway mileage averaged around 27 (average speed was about 70-72), and city was all over the place depending on how heavy footed I was. I would put it about 19.

we had passengers in the back seat on turkey day, and they had absolutely no issues with ride quality (again with good mix of roads over 3 hours back there). Two issues that did come up. The first was the piece of trim that fits behind the door handle on the passenger rear door popped out when the door was closed. I don’t think the trim was properly installed, as when I put it back into place it positively snapped into location. Minor deal, but did have to listen to people rag on me about Hyundai quality (old perceptions are hard to kill). The 2nd was more concerning. It happened twice. I got a low freq resonance and associated vibration. I think it was generated by the transmission, but not necessarily from the transmission. It seems like it happened when the car was in a higher gear, and I was applying more throttle, instead of downshifting immediately, I got this drone for a fraction of second then a downshift. Like it was hesitating and lugging. It only happened twice and the car had about 1500 miles on it when it did. Will have to monitor.

Two other driving aspects about the car that I can relate. To sum it up it is a very sensitive car. My wife drove it the first day we got it and said that the steering was out of whack, she felt she was constantly correcting for a pull to the right. While driving it the next 24 hour or so she had me ½ convinced of the same thing, but the back of my mind wasn’t entirely convinced, especially after remembering another post on here about the same subject. After driving the car over the last week, I can say that the steering is spot on, but this car is more sensitive to road crown, imperfections and contours than any other car I have driven. Not sure if this is a good thing or not. The other thing I noticed is this car is very sensitive to wind. On our drive down to NYC we had crappy weather and a lot of cross wind. Seemed like the car was pushed around a bit more than I would have expected. Also noticed that when in the dirty air behind a truck that you could feel the car body modulating to the left and right a few inches. Having said that I did not feel it at all in the steering wheel.

The tires seem to make more noise than I care for. On concrete roads in particular, the ones with the grooves cut into them can be annoying. Anybody that has been on route 80 in PA knows what I am talking about. I would have liked to have had another car on hand at the same time to make a comparison, so I can’t say this is a Dunlop/Genesis thing or just a road thing.

Two runs up to 130, one with me as the driver and the other with a high school buddy as driver. Car was nothing but smooth the whole way and looking for more room (or the wife to quite yelling at me). It was done in a rather controlled environment (good thing western pa has lots of long tunnels with no traffic late at night).

As for the DIS and interior aspect. Lots of stuff to keep me entertaining while on a 13 hour drive. One thing I would change is having separate brightness controls for day/night mode on display. I found that I liked the screen on the highest brightness during the day, but rather low at night. So when the sun sets/rises it forces me to go into that menu and adjust. The temp control seemed to be somewhat sensitive to outside temperature in that it seemed like it would get you up to a number then back off more when it was a little warmer out (most of the trip was in the 30s, parts of it in the 20s and 40s). I found myself adjusting the temp upwards as time went on. Maybe it is a loss of blood circulation after being in a car so long, not sure but I have never had to run a car with an auto temp setting of higher than 72 in all the vehicles that I have owned with auto climate control and this one I found myself putting it up to 76 at some points. NAV traffic is interesting, provided reasonably good data. NAV system is a bit screwy in my mind. choices for roads seem to be strange at times, and the way it calculates time remaining could be done better. I am used to TOM-TOM and they seem to have that down a bit better. With out you having to go in and adjust your speeds on the 3 different road classes. None the less it is a good system and flawlessly got me through Manhattan at 830 in the morning. Of course the sound system put all in awe.

If I were to rate the car I would give it a 4.5 out of 5. Hyundai is 95% of the way there. I ended up leasing for 27 months and will be looking forward to the next iteration of this car, as I am sure they will have nailed it by then. HMA called me 2 days after I picked up the car and asked all the normal questions, as well as what I would change/do differently in the car. So that tells me something right there. They obviously have their sights set on Lexus and I hope they achieve their goal. I am a capitalist pig and this will be good for my wallet as a consumer, not to mention it will be achieved with out bailing anyone out.

On another note I didn’t see another single genesis on the road. I was somewhat disappointed in this. Only about 6 have been sold in Maine and I was hoping that once I re-joined the rest of society in the lower 48 I would run across one. it became a game on the road, we would think we see one up ahead and it would turn out to be a lexus or an azera. I was only really checked out by 2 people while driving, one fella by himself in an A4, and another guy/wife in an Avalon. You could almost hear him talking to his wife about the genesis as they drove past as she was looking at us, while listening to him. I really hope to see more of us on the road soon!!!

Great write-up Zedbyers. About seeing more Genesis on the road, the odds are against it. I read an estimate somewhere that there are 1,3000,000 cars on US roads. So far there are only about 4000 Genesis. Do the math, the % is even lower than Hyundai's finance rates For me, the exclusivity is part of the fun.

Great review.
I agree with you about the Genesis being sensitive to road surface. I just took a 250 miles day trip. I need to constantly make corrections on the steering. I didn't had any problems with cross winds even I though I was driving in pouring rain at about 85 mph.

I love hearing stories written by guys who love driving their Genesis. I drove a whole lot more than normal; making any excuse to take it out on the highway. It is rare to find a Genesis in the Toronto area. I saw one V6 and no other V8's. I believe V8's in this area are limited to one until at least December.

Very informative review! It was great to read! Down here in south west Florida you currently have a better chance of spotting a Ferrari on the road then you do a Genesis! Now thats exclusive!!!

Hey Canuck Genesis V8,

I took ownership of a v8 genesis a couple weeks ago from Kingscross in Scarborough, where did you get yours? I love the car, the only problem I am having is a can't get my bluetooth to work with my car.

great review! Glad to hear you got to take it out on multiple road conditions and sound like it did very well. I experienced the cross wind effect but realized this is a large car with a high stance so that could be a factor.

candageese, what kind of phone do you have? If it is the type with a datatransfer mode and you have it set 'on' to sync with a server, it will appear to be on a call to the bluetooth system. Need to turn the 'network' mode off. (Different brands/services have different names for this mode.)

The 2nd was more concerning. It happened twice. I got a low freq resonance and associated vibration. I think it was generated by the transmission, but not necessarily from the transmission. I have the 3.8/tech and I have noticed this as well. At first I thought I was driving on a rough patch of road, as the vibration is very similar to the vibration you would get if you drove too far off the highway and hit those little "noise bumps" that are supposed to wake up sleepy drivers.

Now I believe it is the engine "lugging" when it is in too high of a gear, with the RPMs too low, and you give it some gas. It only seems to happen when the engine is at less than 1500 rpm, and you give it a little gas. When it does happen, I usually back off the throttle (I know it's not good to lug an engine), and give it a little punch on the gas and it will downshift, which stops the vibration.

It is a little concerning because I think they may not have properly tuned the shift points on the transmission, which can lead to the engine lugging, which would shorten engine life. I'm only leasing the vehicle though, and I would imagine they can fix it through a software update to the ECM.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm curious if anyone has taken their car to the dealership to look at it? I think I'll mention it during my 3,000 mile service, but I only have 1900 miles on my car so far.

Hey Canadagenesis,
Welcome to the Genesis V8 club of the GTA. Hope you're enjoying yours as much as I'm enjoying mine. There are so many goodies with the tech pkg, I'm still working my way through them. I haven't even gotten to the bluetooth connectivity yet. Check out the technical forum. I'm sure I saw some writeups there.
Maybe I'll see you on the highway sometime. I bought my car at Hyundai of Oakville. Sales manager dealt with me exclusively. First class treatment all the way.

haha, laughing at the people saying something about hyundai quality, wait or let them buy a luxury automakers car and when the electronics get wacky. wait to see their reaction as for instance mercedes-benz has the worst reliabilty of any automaker.
