  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

This is by no means a professional CarPlay installation, but I wanted a quick and easy way to add CarPlay without having to modify the dash or replace the existing screen. I had purchased a cheap CarPlay screen that mounts to the windshield, but the mount was cheap and warped after 2 weeks in the summer heat. It also wasn't ideal since it put the screen above the existing Nav screen, so it was a bit of reach to use and it did block some visibility while driving. I had the idea of putting the screen in front of the Nav screen, but a permanent installation would block the backup camera, radio controls, etc. So I came up with the idea of having the screen mounted on a hinge in front of the Nav screen. I did some prototyping and came up with this:

This puts the screen in the perfection position, but if I needed to access the existing Nav screen, I can just fold it down.

There's magnets on each side to keep it from folding down while driving. I will likely install a threaded rod in the hinge with some thumb screws to tighten it even more. But it didn't seem to move while driving.

It's mounted to the Nav bezel & CarPlay using double sided Gorilla tape, which is very strong, but removable.

I'll be posting the STL to Thingiverse if anyone is interested. Recommend printing in PETG for UV and heat tolerance.
