  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My wife's Borrego went into the shop Friday because it wouldn't start. I had to use the jumper to get it started and drive it to the dealer service center. Found out this morning the Alternator has gone bad and both the alternator and battery must be replaced. The new alternator won't be here until Tuesday of next week.

Just curious if anyone else has had an alternator issue?

Does anyone make an aftermarket/performance alternator for our 4.6's?

What is a Borrego?

It is, but I make a lot of road trips and if this new alternator fails I'm willing to purchase a better aftermarket alternator that I can depend on. I don't want to spend the extra $ but I don't want this to happen again.

I admit I'm confused, it happens all the time at my age. But on the off chance I DO understand:
Your wife has a 4.6 Kia with a warranted alternator replacement.
You're asking if there's an aftermarket alternative for the Kia version?
On a Hyundai Genesis board?
Or are you asking because you drive a 4.6 Genesis but you haven't updated your profile?

Thanks.

We have a 4.6L Kia Borrego, same engine thats in the Genesis 4.6L. I was just curious is anyone has found a better alternator as many parts are interchangeable.

1/2 My 4.7 Dodge Truck mods are for other vehicles i.e. 4.6L Ford Cobra, etc. The key is to find what is is interchangeable.

In that case, I doubt anyone here has looked since we're still under warranty.
I also don't recall anyone having a similar issue, though there may have been one or two(?).

Also, what's your objection to OEM parts? Is this a known issue for Kia?
Lastly, are you sure we share the same alternator as the Kia? If so, thanks I didn't know.

Yes, I also drive a Borrego Limited w/Tau V8. No, I have not had a alternator/battery failure nor have I heard of a failure on the Kia Borrego forum. Unless there is a chronic problem with a specific part (and there does not seem to be with these alternators) I would not consider installing an aftermarket part. I have not looked, but, I suspect the alternators are made by one of the japanese electrical automotive suppliers (mitsubishi, hitachi etc). They all have a great reputation for building quality electrical components. If it was me, I wouldn't panic, just let your warranty cover it. If happens again, discuss it with the service writer.

Well, I do a lot of things but panic isn't one of them. I've build the truck in my sig from the bottom up. Cammed, stalled, boosted, tuned and sprayed all done by me. Anyway, my concern was when I talked to the service manager he told me the alternator going out was no big deal as its common with Kia and Hyundai alternators.

When I get it back from the dealer I will post up the alternator part number to see if its the same as the Hyundai. They will have had it five days by the time I get it back, lol.

My apologies, "panic" probably wasn't the best choice of words. I was just trying to emphasize the idea of letting the dealer/Hyundai solve the problem rather than you go out and spend your money on their problem. An aftermarket alternator (if one exists and/or it would actually be better) could cause you warranty issues if any other electrical problemes were to develope. So far, Hyundai/Kia has been very responsive to issues that develope with my Borrego. If there turns out to be chronic problem with the alternators on the Taus, I suspect they (Hyundai/Kia) will be quick with a recall.
Good Luck with your problem,
Robert V

Thanks for the help guys. I got the Borrego back today with new alternator and battery. The Genesis 4.6L and Borrego 4.6L share the same alternator as I'm sure they do many components.

How are both of you liking your Borregos? Its a shame they arn't making them anymore.... seems like the new Sorento has grown a bit in size. The new Sorento XS is nice though!

I, also, love my Borrego. I bought it over the other SUVs in that class because of the Tau V8, ZF6 transmission, 7500# towing capacity and the better overall value than the others in that class.
I've had ours for 18mos now and it's not been back to the dealer for any problems except a seatback recall.
