  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

70 days ago I almost pulled the entire front bumper off my '18 G80. A couple days later I was in my local body shop where I found out they were scheduling about 70 days ahead due to Covid and lack of available body replacement parts. Yesterday was when I car was supposed to be repaired and I was told the key parts I needed were not available and they didn't know when they would be.

The picture with the bungee cords holding the bumper on had a gap of over 1" open. I'm PISSED. So today I thought I would try to fix the bumper myself until the body shop can get their act together. I started lightly tapping with my fist at the center of the grill, just under the Genesis Wings. Moving right to left, the bumper started sliding back into the clips that hold it in place. Pretty soon I had the bumper back in place to the left side of the grill. The part that is being held in place with my bungee cord still looked like it does in that picture, but slow tapping once again shaped that section back in it's retaining clips as well.

The duck tape is probably not necessary, but a safety precaution to keep the bumper in place. The bumper itself has several cracks in it, but this gets me back on the road. I asked the body shop guy if what I did was possible and he said no. If anyone is wondering, the estimate to replace the bumper is $2,900.

my neighbor wrecked his ford explorer the only thing they need is a front fender & they have been waiting 3 months for it. he went to the bodyshop to get it & bring it home while they wait & found it on the back lot with the window down ,rain soaked seat & a dead battery. now they are ordering carpet, new seat skin & some window switches. ugh

Nice job getting yourself back on the road. Will the body shop call you when they get the parts? I currently have a roll of red duct tape that I got at Ace Hardware that might not look too bad. Just a thought. Good luck getting the repair done

Yeah, they said they would call me as soon as they receive the parts. While I want it fixes ASAP, with the damaged bump now firmly attached, I don't really care that much. Since my "mode", the bumper appears to be VERY secure. I may take the duck tape off. When I pull down on the bumper now (moderately), it really seems locked in place. As far as I can tell, all the "bumper" electronics work fine. Camera, adaptive cruise control, warning when approaching walls, etc). The body shop told me when the bumper is replaced, a company comes out to make sure all of this stuff still works correctly.

I had to go out of town for a couple of weeks and rented a car ($520 bucks down the drain). I'm going to add car rental insurance to my policy. For $13 every 6 months, if I damage my car, the insurance company pays for a rental until the vehicle is repaired. If someone else damages my car, their insurance should pay. As per my post above, it's been 70 days and counting now.

I kinda like the gray tape. I think is says, watch out for me, I don't mind "mixing" it up. Just kidding...
In truth, I don't think I need any duct tape as the bumper seems very secure in the top clips. I don't know for sure, but the top clips may be the main or only thing holding the bumper to the car.

nice job. the silver duct tape is a bit tacky.... I like the red duct tape idea.
