  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I drive a 2012 3.8 Sedan and it has the same issue going from 2-3 and 4-5, also the reverse shifts a bit rough too. I found this is a common issue for A8LR1 trannys in this model and Hyundai remanufactured and replaced a lot under warranty. I wish the owner I bought mine from had done this because once I hit 85,000 I started to see these rough flares/slips in these gears. I looked at the unit manual and there’s a drum in the transmission which operates the 3rd, 5th, and Reverse gears and clutch packs. I believe this is the biggest issue with these trannys. I heard that there was some kind of patch to the software of the TCM which helped with this issue & want to get it fixed, although I haven’t been able to find info on this update people talk about, and I’m too scared to have it taken out and replaced with a new gear drum lol. If anyone knows of this information Replying or PMing me would be great.

I had the same issue on my January built 2013. First trans replaced at 60k miles. The current one developed this same issue (delay shift from 2-3, 4-5, and reverse) at 118k miles. Hyundai said they wouldn't attempt to repair, only replace. Found the TSB 16-AT-011 Genesis Technical Service Bulletin for this issue and being out of warranty, I attempted the repair (on another thread) but damaged the ribbon connector in the e-module. Ended up bringing my car into a local trans shop and they replaced the valve body assembly with a used (tested) unit. Rest of the trans was left alone. It's back to shifting like normal. I suggest finding a local place to take a look. The same shift solenoid operates the 2-3, 4-5 and reverse shifts. So it's likely either the solenoid or that area of the valve body.

First of all, Thank you for the reply, this is good stuff. I’ve done this but the transmission guys won’t touch it because I have 0 lights on my dash and never once got an issue code. I took it in for them to drive and of course, it didn’t replicate and they looked at me like I was crazy lol. I saw in the assembly instructional that 3/5/R has its own drum with the same clutch to engage the three. Similarly, you’re right, the same solenoid valve controls this drum and clutch too. Maybe I just have to wait for a code and drive her into the dirt? Oh well..!

How is it performing so far?

I’m up to about 132,000 miles and it’s still shifting as it should. I hope it stays this way!

I have been looking for a solution like this for my 2012 with 116,000 miles. It started acting up after the battery died and we had to jump start it so I always suspected the issue was electronic in nature. Are you able to share how much the valve body and solenoid replacement cost was? Thanks so much!

Hello 2012Ginny.
Yes, it was only $600 to repair. I'm now up to 141,000 miles and still works as it should. More detailed information can be found on this other post: https://genesisowners.com/genesis-f...-go-as-planned-help-please.38261/#post-472492
