About to place an order - a few questions about the Automatic Braking feature

Good Morning one and all.

I am crossing over from being a long time lurker to almost being a new owner and hence a first time poster.

I have already had the chance to go and see the car myself and this Sunday, the wifey will have a chance as well. I have already been discussing with her about the car so she is aware of all that it has to offer. More than likely she will like what she sees and what the car offers and we will discuss getting an Empire Gray/Black 3.8 AWD Ultimate with the dealer which is close to us. I already have an internet offer from another nearby dealer for $49,547 [not including registration, destination and good ole uncle Sammy's cut]. We are in NYC, so hopefully the first dealer will meet/beat this offer. If not, we have the other place to go and after having read what others have paid, are pretty comfortable with this price.

We have a 7 year old daughter and our number 1,2 & 3 concerns are safety, safety & safety. Beginning with 4, it's everything else this vehicle has to offer.

I have read most of the posts which have caught my eyes and have done several searches related to the Automatic Braking feature this car has and have also seen the various videos posted related to this. Thank you Pahaska for sharing your experience when the truck in front broke down unexpectedly and how the car stopped - so am fully aware of what it will do in those situations.

A few questions regarding AB have come up:
1). Is it always active or is it part of the Smart Cruise Control? In Pahaska' case SCC was enabled. From what I have gathered in other posts, it is always active, but would love some additional confirmations.
2). If always active, how does/would it respond in normal 45 mph medium to heavy traffic? If the vehicle in front of us is only 2 car lengths ahead and slows down quickly, will the AB kick in or will I have control over it - i.e. will my own reactions be sufficient?

I apologize for the long post and apologize even more if this has been already discussed at great length and my search skills are in the gutter.

1. Always active, but you won't be aware of it. I've seen the warning light flash when a car cut in front of me and turned but have never had the car apply the brakes, so I haven't actually experienced AB (and hope I don't in the future) .

2. To my knowledge NONE of the safety features can or will override the driver's inputs. In other words, if the car started braking and you wanted to accelerate around the "obstacle" the car would cancel the AB and would do nothing to interfere with your own inputs

The AB can be disabled in setup if so desired. No the smart cruise doesn’t have to be on. Like ckon I have to take this as a leap of faith since I’ve never have been in a situation requiring it activating. That said means that it has never altered my braking or driving in any way which is a good thing. My wife insisted on the Empire Gray with Black so my wait was long but ultimately worth it. You might want to check out White Plains Hyundai they move a lot of Genesis there. They beat the best deal I had.

It is always active. I have had it begin to stop the car in slow stop-and-go traffic several times when I was a bit slow to get on the brake. In every case, I would have stopped safely, but the car is a bit more conservative than I am. I think the feature is awesome.

To try to answer at least one part of your question completely AEB does NOT operate at all times.
Examples:

• Speed below 5 MPH
• Speed above 110 MPH
• System Manually Disabled in Gauge Menus (This appears to cycle back to ON every time car is turned on)
• Stability Control Turned Off (Not 100% sure on this one, but the override seems to work by disabling all computer-controlled braking) (This is the second stage of disabling traction control, for which you have to hold the button)

Note that malfunctions and manual disabling of the AEB system produce a warning light on the dash.
Also note that between 50-110MPH the system is "partially on" as it will not apply full braking power. This makes sense IMO because at higher speed the risk of losing control from unexpected braking may outweigh reducing speed of collision.

Ernie: Thank you for the input regarding WP Hyundai. They too quoted me the exact same price. Seems as if the Tri-state dealers will all be very similar.

I've had the auto brake activate twice in about 3000 miles of mixed driving and as noted earlier it just beat me to it. I think it is a very valuable safety feature that should be standard on every car. We like everything about our new Genesis.
