If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I’ve been tracking my gas mileage since I got my G70. I'm just hit 4000 km's today. Some of these initial mileage numbers may seem bad but I did get my car in the middle of winter. We had one of most brutally cold winters I’ve ever experienced. We had about a 5 week stretch where it basically did not get warmer than -40*C (-40*F). Maybe we hit high -30’s for like an hour in the middle of the afternoon. It sucked. We did hit -50*C (-58*F) as well over that span.

Anyways I always wondered how accurate the in-vehicle mileage estimators were. Not just the G70 but all vehicles. I compared my actual mileage obtained by using exact numbers entered into an app to the in-vehicle rating at fill-up time. After fill-up I manually reset the accumulated info screen. Here were my results. The differences aren’t massive but the one constant is the in-vehicle reading is always better than the actual mileage tracked. Nearly 1L better.

The first two numbers are the actual mileage MPG (Imperial) and L/100km from entering my numbers into an app. The third number is the in-vehicle estimation. The 4th number is the difference between the actual mileage and the in-vehicle estimation. The 5th number is the MPG (US) for all you yanks.

MPG (Imperial) - L/100km - In-Vehicle Fuel Tracker - Difference - MPG (US)
22.77 MPG - 12.40 L/100km - 12.1 L/100km - .30 - 18.95
22.64 MPG - 12.47 L/100km - 11.8 L/100km - .67 - 18.85
21.01 MPG - 13.44 L/100km - 12.7 L/100km - .77 - 17.49
18.34 MPG - 15.40 L/100km - 14.2 L/100km - 1.2 - 15.26
17.96 MPG - 15.73 L/100km - 15.0 L/100km - .73 - 14.95
19.09 MPG - 14.80 L/100km - 13.7 L/100km - 1.1 - 15.89
19.91 MPG - 14.19 L/100km - 13.1 L/100km - 1.09 - 16.57
23.86 MPG - 11.84 L/100km - 10.9 L/100km - .96 - 19.86
25.00 MPG - 11.30 L/100km - 10.6 L/100km - .70 - 20.81
23.70 MPG - 11.92 L/100km - 11.0 L/100km - .92 - 19.73
24.06 MPG - 11.04 L/100km - 10.8 L/100km - .60 - 20.93

The average difference from all the entries is 0.72.

Up until the last 4 fill-ups I was pretty much driving in eco-mode 100% of the time. Now it’s more of a mixed bag. I tend to drive conservatively half the time and then have a little fun the other half. On the way to work it’s conservative and on the way home i'st the scenic route and a little more fun.

I’m going to continue to track this just to get a larger sample set. I’ll update my original post with the additional entries for anyone who wants to see the differences.

On a positive side note now that winter is past and I’m no longer needing to warm up the vehicle I'm getting better than the EPA numbers for the G70. It’s rated at 21/30 (imperial) or 13.3/9.4 L/100km and I’m 100% city driving. Although it’s not bumper to bumper traffic. A little stop and go here and there, but mostly moving along pretty consistently without any sitting in traffic for long periods of time.

Nice! Appreciate the detailed review and statistical information on this. Looks like the trip computer tends to estimate things on the more conservative side, which is to be expected. Looks good!

Nice! I hope you keep this up so we can get a spring/summer update. If you add dates and weekly average T° to your table, we'll have a stew cookin.

I noticed and have complained about the inaccuracy of the internal calculations myself on the G80 3.3T posted a thread about it last year as well.

Hyundai got in trouble with the EPA for overstating/estimating MPG back in 2014 for 2009-2014 vehicles, The algorithms they use for the onboard calculations appear to not have been changed since IMO.. my G80 Sport estimates that I can get 490 miles out of 19 gallon tank of fuel at every fill which is 25.7mpg, but I have never gotten more than 360 miles out of 17-18 gallons, and that was on a long steady trip, and when I fill typically I put in 17-18 gallons: at 18 gallons that is 20mpg, at 17 it is 21.1mpg.

The more realistic results are around 18.6 mpg doing a manual calculation at every fill (total miles since last fill divided by actual fuel put into tank).

I find it odd that you get that estimate. I have the same tank but a 3.8 and the most it tells me at fill up is 420. Of course I never got near that.

I gave up calculating a long time ago and just use it as a reference. If it says 23 mpg this trip versus 21 last, then I know I got a bit better mileage; really it is about 2 mpg less. Now that my driving habits have changed I try not to even look as I do much more short trip and only fill up every two weeks or so. I went from 22,000 a year to about 7,000.

The Distance to Empty is deceptive. I always get more but it never adjusts after a day or so to show you higher. It just stays at the same number for a bit once it realizes it is wrong.
My Acura would go up and down based on how I drove that day.
Highest I've seen on my G70 is 635km but I get 700+ easy on a full tank. I do a 140km round trip for work and after the first day it will say 545km instead of 635-140=495km.
The instant fuel economy meter is pretty close though!

I have a 3.3T AWD, with 5,000 miles now, and my mileage calculations are always at least 1.5MPG lower than the computer's. So that is disappointing. In highway driving, where it may read 29, it's more like 27. (I just posted this in the mileage discussion thread, not realizing this one was here.) My BMW's trip computer was very accurate.

Speaking of MPGs, what type of gas is everyone using?

I've had my g70 3.3 awd for 1000 miles and it seems better on mileage in smart mode than any other, getting almost 21 in mixed driving

I believe you can use a lower octane, but the computer will dial back the timing/power a bit. I think someone answered this more definitively in another thread on mileage. My sales guy pushed the fact that it can use regular, but I don't think that's the manufacturer's intention.

Just an update with a few more tanks. I also noticed that the 2020 3.3t dropped from 18 to 17 in the EPA numbers.

I’ve tracked my gas mpg averages as well as gas cost for nearly 15000 miles (16 months worth of driving & fill ups) using the Fuelly app. Fifty-six fill-ups, 831 gallons of premium ($3.82/gallon avg). Avg mpg 18.2- which is always lower than the car’s avg mpg indicator.

So yesterday I had to take a ~500 round trip, was kind of an emergency situation, I filled the tank and took to the highway, it was 100% highway, I set the SCC @ 80mph, but basically paced the guy in front of me in the HOV lane for a bit over 200 miles @ 68mph. In normal mode.

I managed to make it there and back on 1 tank with miles to empty showing 74 when we returned. Computer is showing 33.7mpg for the trip 496 miles, with 74 to go assuming a fill of about 18 gallons, the real world would be around 31mpg.
