  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Alright fellow genny owners I need some purchasing advice here. I drove last night a 2009 CPO full tech package with 30,500K on the clock I was able to get it for $20,200 plus all the other BS fees.

Here is what is holding me back:

1) Trade in they are only giving me $10K for mine I own $12,800
2) There was a accident reported on the car fax, all it says and I copied this from the car fax "Accident reported Involving right side impact Vehicle functional"

I could not see any damage, and believe me that I'm extremely picky and I know what to look for in regards to vehicle damage.

V8 or V6???? This info would be important to know - If you're picky.....skip the car due to the accident.

Sorry about that its a V6. In regards to the accident I could not see anything the right side was straight, gaps on hood to fender, fender to door and door to door are all the same. The rear quarter panel solid via tapping listening for a difference in sound. I understand that a carfax is limited as to the info and for the better part any type of accident as small as a fender bender if the police are called its reported.

So this is why I'm stuck

This is probably more about price than anything, especially if you are as positive about the condition/drivability of the car as you appear to be. Do more research (KBB, etc.) to be sure the discount for the Carfax and accident are already truly built into the asking price. If not, negotiate harder or walk away. Don't act like you love the car!

Truth be told the reason why I'm even talking about this 2009 tech package is because I went in looking and driving something else, a 2010 premium package. After driving the 2010 PP and inspecting it I see that it has aftermarket HID and a botched install the Ballast where screwed into the sheet metal and the headlamp cap housings where drilled so the bulbs could pass through and openings where left open.

Mind you this 2010 is a CPO car, and after pointing this out to the sales man, after he comes back from being inside for about 10 mins talking to someone, he starts telling me that the he can do better on the 2009 TP, and that the price of the 2010 PP was wrong (not so much wrong but they had less room to negotiate ) so he starts to steer me over to the 2009 TP.

Both of these cars have been on the lots for as long as I have been looking (I started looking on the 3rd of this month) and as I'm also having a hard time selling my car privately I'm sure that they also are wanting to move inventory since its the end of the month.

I have to agree.

And I'll just add this... carfax is SOOOOOO far from reliable, it's not even funny. I had $6,500 run-in with a deer (with a 10-yr old car, mind you), and the carfax didn't even show it. AT ALL. It did, however, show the time I got rear-ended to the tune of $3 grand 8 years ago.

I don't buy used cars. I know how dumb it is to buy new, but I can't help myself. I DO know that if I were to buy used, I would only buy a car from someone I know. Can't trust 3rd parties... period. Of course, if the dealer is offering a good warranty, that's a different story, I suppose.

after a very close inspection, around 25mins I was able to see where the work was done. BTW I had a friend pull the VIN history, and this particular car has been hit twice. No wonder the sales guy was pushing it so hard.

Time to keep on looking

I wouldn't buy a car that had been in any accident. In fact, if I am ever in an accident, I would rather repair it and trade in for a new car than deal with occult damage. That much kinetic energy transfer has to exit somewhere be it a broken electrical system or whatever on a completely unrelated area of the car.

I think you mad the right move to walk away. I have never bought a used car before but clearly understand that it makes sense. I would not, however, buy a car that's been in an accident. Ever. There will be other options for you especially if ou live in a large city.

You had a friend "pull the VIN history". How is that done? Is it something only a dealer can do?

Good luck and I hope you find the Genesis you're looking for.

I can't figure out your location, but it might make sense to spend some time on AutoTrader. There are often some very nice 2009-2010s with under 30,000 miles on them.

That is so true about Carfax, six years ago I was rear ended by a pickup truck doing about 60 MPH while waiting for a light. 14K worth of damage on a 2 year old Lexus LS430
It took 5 months for it to show up on Carfax. Let the buyer beware!
