Advice wanted - Purchase 2020 or wait until 2021 Models deliver??

Thanks for your understanding as this is my first thread I've started. I want to thank everyone who's answered my questions on the "Post purchase price details here (US $ only)" thread as well as to the really great people on this forum.

My plan has been to lease/purchase a 2020 G70 3.3T Sport around mid-April. While reading a lot of the other threads and doing some more research, I'm now conflicted if it makes more sense to wait to pull the trigger and wait for the 2021 models. Seeing how there's a possibility the design update with split headlamps, new front frill, updated rear lamps and increased features/options might be available, it's really making me doubt my original decision to get a 2020 in the next 2 months. I realize there isn't anything definitive out there regarding the 2021 G70s but in my current situation, I can afford to wait until the 2021s are released. Might also make sense to wait even if no big changes are expected as by then some good deals on 2020s might be available? What I am afraid of by waiting is the possibility of a lack of inventory of the specific color and spec I want, especially if it doesn't make sense to go with a 2021, as well as my desire to get a new car as I'm sick of driving a 6 spd manual around Los Angeles...plus my better half doesn't know how to drive a stick, which, even though she drives a minivan, makes trading cars impossible.

What if they change the specs for '21 and I wait for no reason?
versus FOMO.
Partner driving limitations.
Traffic obstacles for a Manual transmission.

My guess is the last two issues are what are driving you to this site. Others have had the same questions regarding 2019 vs 2020 and some resolved on each side of that decision. Perhaps they can offer insight. If you are definite on the G70 that takes care of a large part of the shopping question so you are now in the smaller but thornier parts.
You will love the auto brake hold feature and smart cruise control among other advanced electronics and I encourage you to test those items when you drive a dealer example in your traffic.

Unless your color is discontinued sooner or later you can get it.
I guess it comes down to self control and how bad the itch for new is. Happiness today or a year from now. Only you can make the final call, maybe put points on what I mention below.

Potential for refreshed style you may like better
Potential to save money for down payment

Don't Wait
Easier commute in traffic.
Makes mama happy as she can drive it

It seemed to tone down a bit once I bought the car. At that point I wasn't doing research on prices and availability or lusting after it as much.

To answer the original question: I would advise you to wait (and maybe teach your SO how to drive stick). They were released around late March 2019 and I bought end of April 2019. Despite my Circle-A pricing, looking at the deals people got in the months afterwards, especially December 2019, kinda made me wish I waited.

I completely understand driving a manual in LA traffic (the '04 Frontier has a heavy clutch to boot). I will say that while I felt remorse about not saving a few grand, I couldn't care less if I'm sitting in traffic these days. The G70 has all the creature comforts I could want (besides Audi massage seats) and can practically drive itself with SCC (and Lane assist if traffic is moving fast enough...rarely is though).

I personally wouldn't count on the 2021 G70 being facelifted. I am expecting it to be a 2022 model year. They have the 2021 GV80 that was just shown, the 2020 G80 which has yet to be shown and I just assume that will be it for next year. I could be wrong, but I personally wouldn't wait. A major update after just 2 model years is rare.

So the question is, do I have the patience to wait until next year for the 2022? I do agree with you and think the major update will be for the 2022 model.

I would at least wait until we can confirm what the 2021 model changes will be (if any). That way, once you know, you can be more comfortable in choosing which one to get, and you'll probably get better discounts on the 2020 if you choose that route.

Australian pubs have the updated Stinger scheduled for launch in the 2nd half of the year, so if accurate, wouldn't be surprised if the F/L G70 sees a similar timetable.

At the very least, it seems likely the Korean market will get it late this year w/ the other markets getting it in the 1st half of 2021 (as a 2022MY).

Waiting... trust me, there will typically always be changes. So how long can one wait? I'm in the camp that if you like the current model, pull that trigger. I say so since you'll be able to enjoy the ride sooner. And then the clock can start anew to purchase that next vehicle. I suspect my age might be showing, but changes these days happen much more quickly. With that premise, one can always have self doubt as to when to buy. But, take the bird in the hand approach, make the buy, and enjoy it.

I'd be more interested in getting the 3.5t, with more power and supposedly better fuel economy, than the facelift.
Either way, no guarantees when.

I cannot help at all with your dilemma. There is no way I could ever wait two months, let alone two years, once I've even begun to think about a car purchase!

Look at Asian petrolhead on YouTube. He has the 2020 Korean G70. I expect the North American 2021 to look like that. The 2020 NA G70 matched closely with 2019 Korean G70, except no 3D gauge cluster.

Appreciate all the replies to this post! Quick update, test drove a couple more vehicles over the weekend, the BMW M340i and the AMG CLA C35. Although I really enjoyed driving the AMG, maybe even slightly more than the G70, and the manager was able to give me a really good offer on a lease, I know I won't want to purchase the AMG after 3 years, and after paying $690 a month for a car, I'd rather have something to show for it after 3 yrs.

I'm going to contact a few Genesis dealers this week to get the process started. The plan is to lease the vehicle with the intent to purchase, rather than paying full cash for it from the start, as I've been told that dealers nowadays don't really give "better" deals for an all cash purchase.

The M340i test drive was definitely the most underwhelming, but to be fair, I also think it was because of the sales person. The sales people who went on the test drive with me at Genesis and Benz were so knowledgeable and taught me so much regarding the vehicles, at BMW, not at all. This might have been my fault as well, maybe she wanted to give me my space while I was driving or waiting for me to start asking the questions.

Received the Circle Certificate from @r_spec earlier today and called the dealership. The internet manager confirmed they have the vehicle I'm looking for so headed there later today to hopefully close the deal. Big shout out to @r_spec!
