  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

While at my dealer yesterday to "correct" a Bluetooth problem (corrected by cell phone dealer) the Service Writer punched in my VIN and told me that there is a Recall. Said it has to do with airbags. (said Recall, not TSB as I remember it).

I have an appointment for April 21st, after I return from my road trip.

Anyone else hear anything about a recall?

Yes, this has been discussed in other threads, and some people have received postcards from dealer or Hyundai (I don't recall which one). One source claims that cars made before December 1, 2008 need the fix, but there is no official confirmation on that.

What is you date of manufacture? Should be listed in drivers door jam.

I had my 3.8 done last week, but I had to tell the dealer. Got the info on this site (great job!).
I believe it was called T-78, took about 15 minutes.
They could not really tell me what it did. They just get a disc and do the update???

I doubt that is a software only update. Supposedly the airbag was not firing fast enough. I don't now if they replace the airbag, or some control sensors near the front bumper, or something else.

Well whatever it is, I will get it done when I return from my trip.

Just spoke with my Orlando Hyundai dealer and found that the recall is:

The Airbag Control Unit Update.

I will either get it done in Roswell NM (or Phoenix AZ), or if I don't have time, I will just get it done when I return to Florida.

This is a software update which supposedly fixes the side airbag deployment. I had this done when I brought my car to a tune up.

This addresses on of the issues in the IIHS report for vehicles produced before December 2008. However as far as I know this does not address the front airbag problem where you head will hit the steering wheel in a crash.

From the follow-up article in kicking tires it looks like that will require a replacement of the front airbag.

I got this done while I was out in Pheonix. I think it was the T79 but may have been T78 as I can't remember.

And they did not replace the actual front airbag but just performed a software upgrade?

Cheers

Yep. When I had it done in Phoenix, it took the tech all of ten minutes. What really surprised me was they then took my car and gave it a FREE carwash (mini-detail) inside and out. Took much longer to clean the car than to do the T79 update. I think the name of the dealer was Chapman (or Chipman) Hyundai at 999 Bell Road, Phoenix.

Those free car wash/details scare me because I have window tint film installed, and standard ammonia-based glass cleaner is a no-no.
