  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My wife and I looked at the Genesis last week at an auto show. Although we really liked what we saw, it will be too cold here in Las Vegas to test the AC. When you live in the desert, how it functions in 110 + degree temps is important. If possible, if some owners could pass on their experiences, I would appreciate it

A Genesis review was done just outside of LV in the middle of Summer. It was stated that that the A/C blew ice cold.

I test drove the 2012 Genesis 4.6 here in Northern California in August/September and it was 108 outside at the time of the test drive. The AC worked great! I just wish the passenger seat had the cooled seating like the drivers seat.

We did not quite reach 110 here in Austin this summer, we reached 108 officially, but I never felt that I lacked sufficient AC.

Be prepared for a lot of fan noise, though, for quite a while after starting up a heat-soaked car. I can practically tell the temperature by when the fan goes off full blast when starting up hot. I have no additional tinting.

My opinion is that the Genesis stacks up well with every car I have ever owned as far as AC goes. If I lived in the desert, though, I would opt for tinting.

I would seriously suggest the tech package so you can get the cooled driver seat though.

on my way there and it's all good:

I don't know about the 2012, but early Genesis sedan models had adequate, but not great A/C, and there are some complaints about the A/C posted in this forum going back a few years. I would rate it about on par with many German cars (doesn't get real hot in Germany), although not sure if they have improved recently.

If A/C is a concern, and in a place like LV, I would definitely get the Platinum Metallic or White. Studies have shown more than 50 degree higher temp on sheet metal (including roof) with a black car compared to silver/white. I posted a link to the study a few weeks ago.

Interior color make little difference, in part becasue dash and area around windows are always dark colors to avoid reflections. A good quality tint job(ceramic film preferred) is also key. Do not settle for a dye or charcoal tint film in LV.

The color has much less of an effect as to interior temperatures when compared to glass area. Studies have shown that glass area allows much more heat into the car than the exterior color. I think that is why more and more vehicles, like the Genesis, have rear sun shades and in some cases side sun shades.

I specifically said that interior color is not a factor, but I do believe that exterior color is at least a partial factor. It is true that sun hitting the glass causes a significant greenhouse effect and heats up the interior, which is why I recommended window tinting with a high quality reflective tint film. But even if sheet metal temps are not as significant as the greenhouse effect on the glass, having the sheet metal on the roof at 160 degrees is not going to help when trying to cool down the car.

After living here for 30 years, we normally shop for cars in the summer heat. We'll bring a thermometer in the AC and check for the temp. that the car's air gets down to, plus how hard it works to accomplish that task. To contrast our two present vehicles, our Enclave does a great job at cooling off a lot of cabin space, while my 328 BMW convertible (with a hard top), has to remain on high and struggles to get the temperature to a comfortable level. I don't mind if the Hyundai works hard for a little while, but if the AC works well and the fan can be at less than full, it makes listening to radio or conversing a lot easier.

As you can see from my pics. I have the fan setting at 2 in 112 heat. It can be turned to 7 I believe. It's a big car, so yes if it's sitting in the sun it will take a full blast to get the temps down, but once you're there, the car is insulated and the A/C is ice cold. There are vents in the back seat not only in the center console but also on the B pillars next to the doors. There is also a rear window shade. I have 30% ceramic tint and a windshield sunvisor and I have had no issues with the sun. I know it's not Vegas, but its still LA.

A geeky engineering evaluation:

Keeping the vents open in the center console to the rear and the side door sills in 100+ heat will likely cool the whole cabin much more quickly than just a few vents from the front dash.

Please don't quote me. It's simply a fluid dynamics equation that will indicate that more distributed convection leads to better results, thus the convection oven. The US limits what can be done for chemical use of refridgerants, but avoiding heat sources in a car's vent system is always a fun design challenge.

Of course, the end result is not huge all things being equal, so don't expect miracles. I certainly wouldn't buy a car based on its ability to cool/heat quickly, but I know we all have our needs.

I agree with TJPark01. Here in Texas we can go weeks with temps over 100 and other than the first week when I had the settings wrong, I've been quite pleased with the 2009 genny's ac and expect to be just as satisfied with the 2012.

I have a black on black 2011 V8 Tech. I absolutely love the car. The one thing I'm not thrilled with is the A/C speed to cool the car down. I understand that a black interior gets hot, but my Genny doesn't blow "ice cold" air like a Lexus. My wife drives a Toyota Sienna and she has even commented that her Sienna gets cool much faster then the Genesis.

I will say something to my dealer on the upcoming 10,000 mile oil change, but from my perspective, the AC is a weak point on an otherwise fantastic car.

Sometimes will open up the sunroof to help vent the heated air trapped in the interior to reduce the overall time.

Opening the roof and all the windows for the first 30 seconds or so helps. Initially, the system will be on recirc, so the sooner you expel the overheated air from the cabin the better.

I live in Florida so the heat is not the only problem but also with a lot of humidity. The AC system in my Jenny appears to do a good job with both the heat and humidity. My wife really likes the ability to control the passenger side temperature since she likes a warmer setting. Then I do. Overall, I am real happy with the air conditioning and heating system in this car.
