  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Always check your new oil filters.

Hello everyone,

New member, first post. 2010 Genesis Sedan, 4.6 V-8.

Just wanted to put this out as a warning/PSA to closely look over your new oil filter when doing an oil/filter change. I checked mine this afternoon and realized that one of the O rings on the inside of the filter cartridge was missing (Not the big O ring around the screw-on cap). This would've kept it from sealing against either the filter cap where it clicks in, or against the "pipe" that the other end goes over inside the filter housing. Either way, if I had missed that detail and installed it, it could/would have kept the oil from filtering properly, potentially shortening engine life either a little or a lot. There should be one of these O rings just on the inside of each end of the filter cartridge, as this particular filter is symmetrical and designed to be installed with either end out. (Maybe oil filters other than the 4.6 part number are designed differently?)
Seeing this made me wonder if this may have caused the early demise of other Hyundai motors, or any other engine with a similarly-designed oil filter. Who knows. But I certainly don't want it to happen to mine. Or yours.
Hope everyone has a good weekend.

What o-ring are you referring to? My 5.0 does not have one inside of the filter. It does have one on the canister cap and a vent plug.

If you look inside the edge of the center hole in this picture, there’s an O ring that sits in the first little groove, and there’s also one on the other end. The first filter I bought was missing one of those O rings.

Oh okay. The 2014 filter looks different.

Thanks for the info!

Sure thing. If you have the 5.0 engine, that might also have a different filter than the 4.6 anyway, I don't know. I was under the impression that the 3.8 and the 4.6 used the same filters, but I could be wrong on that one.

Here's the filters I use for the 3.8.

It is similar looking, and might be the same. This particular one does not have separate o-rings on the filter itself, just the rubber (or whatever it is) end caps, like the majority of such filters.

Maybe there are different designs for the same application, some with one O ring and a seal of some other design on the other end. At any rate, as long as both ends seal like they should, that’s what counts here. :-)

Me personally I will stick with the OEM Hyundai oil filters.

I have a 2012 Genesis sedan 3.8 ltr and I use the Fram TG10515. It has different ends. When I bought the car I noticed after an oil change that it sounded different and I was told by dealer to use one of them over the other because it tended to help the engine run quieter.
I don't notice anymore..

Hey I am curious what you mean by it had different ends: Robot or human?

I am asking because my 2012 3.8 is sounding a bit funny like it has a vacuum leak or something from the engine and coincidentally coming after I changed the oil a few months back........0w20 oil and Fram filter used slightly different version but this one Lot of 2 FRAM CH10515 Oil Filter For HYUNDAI Azera, Equus, KIA Amanti | eBay (CH10515)

I have seen filter insert with different materials at top and bottom of filter or end cap? I have seen rubber end caps and I’ve also found paper and also this sort of composite material at the end. Mine sounds a little more clangy or too valve trainy then I personally like. After 9years I’m fine with it cause it halls ass!
