If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So I've been reading threads on here and researching what little is on the net about exhaust options for the 5.0 R-spec and am wondering, with all the complaints about being too loud or drone, has anyone just tried adding aftermarket mufflers to the stock exhaust?

I'd like a little sound myself but dont want excessive noise or frankly the $1,2-1,300 expense of a full catback.

So I'm wondering about possibilities for just muffler replacement.

Your thoughts/experiences?

For myself, I deleted the resonator and had an x-pipe welded in its place. Replaced the secondary cats with test pipes and replaced the stock mufflers with Borla Pro XS's. There is some drone at highway speeds in 8th and the engine is under load - ie when going up inclines not steep enough to warrant a downshift. But otherwise am quite happy with the setup overall. Nice little bark on start up but generally a nice deep tone when cruising but not at all intrusive IMO. At full throttle it has a sweet AMG-like tone to it. Actually the whole setup to me is very close to what an AMG exhaust note is like. Balls with class. Personally, I didn't consider a cat back as the stock exhaust is already 2.25" which is pretty generous. Going any bigger I don't think would gain you much if anything in terms of power and from what I've read, most every V8 Genesis owners are regretting their cat backs.

I don't regret doing mine, there's just more drone than I'd like. Eventually want to try out a set of helmholtz resonators. My setup is deleted secondary cats, a set of Vibrant 12 inch bottle resonators, x-pipe and a set of Paradox Hot Tamale mufflers all in 2.5 inch diameter. Sounds very aggressive under load but tones down when just cruising. Drones around 1500-2000 so I wouldn't recommend my exact setup if you're worried about it.

I saw a video on YouTube of a guy that did just a resonator delete and left the stock piping and mufflers that I thought sounded close to what I'm looking for.

So now I'm up in the air on resonator delete with stock mufflers or changing out the mufflers and leaving everything else stock.

Most people on here tend to go for the muffler delete and keep the resonator in place. That's what I did and i love it

So an update, today I went to the local recommended exhaust shop and they were first class. I told him what I was looking for and he was willing to spend some time working with me. First he just unbolted the exhaust after the resonator and let me hear and drive it like that. Granted, not exactly the same sound as with tailpipes all the way out the back. Honestly it wasn't as loud as I thought it would be and the tone was quite nice. But after driving and getting all of the interior noise, which I knew would be there with the exhaust stopping under the cabin, I kind of shied away from that option. Then we talked about just deleting the stock resonator and leaving the stock mufflers. Ending up going that route to be safe and figured if I want more I can always add to it.

So, with the factory resonator gone and straight pipes in it place but retaining the stock mufflers heres my opinion. Inside the car sounds completely stock no matter how it's being driven or at what speed. However you do get an exterior boost in sound that is not bad but definitely mild. Basically people outside watching you drive will get some sound but inside it's no different than stock IMHO.

I want a little more than that so hopefully this week I'll being going back and seeing what a pair of aftermarket mufflers sounds like with this set up. He carries all the major brands and says he can mock each of them up to let me hear them.

If I go that route and after driving decide it's too much he says he can replace the straight pipe where the stock resonator used to be with some center through mufflers to act as resonators, which will tone it down a little more.

I will keep this thread updated but you guys who complain about sound in the cabin but want some sound might look into just a resonator delete.

Sorry for the long update folks.

What I ended up with is deleted resonator and Magnaflow 12-226 mufflers. Sound is not obnoxious but if you dont like any exhaust sound inside then you wont like this, or probably ANY aftermarket exhaust options.

That said it's fairly minimal IMO. I think theres more sound in the car than out personally. Inside I would say in terms of decibels and tone its similar to a stock modern 5.0 Mustang. Outside the car you can hear it but its deeper than a lot of other exhaust clips I've seen online.

Decide for yourself. Heres a few not that great clips I did. Sounds better on a PC with speakers than a phone but sound quality isn't that good.
