Given the ordering and purchasing of long-lead items, many of which come from outside of Korea, there isn't a direct correlation between currency values and sticker prices. Having said that, if the exchange rate remains at it's current level, it is not unrealistic to expect prices to come down, if not at least remain level.
I am pretty sure there is a direct correlation between currency values and prices. As you say if the exchange rate remains at its current level it is not unrealistic to expect prices to come down.
The Korean won has done worse than any other Asian currency recently. Currencies fluctuate literally by the second. I don't have any idea what the won will do in the next seven months but I do know what it has done in the last seven months.
Some car sales people do pay attention to these things and I'm sure some are clue less.
When I started shopping for cars, probably in June, I looked at the new Jaguar (I don't recall what it is called but it is quite beautiful), the sales guy tried to give me a push by saying that the cars on the lot were purchased when the Brittish pound was lower and that next week they would be raising the price because there were cars coming in that they paid more for. The pound was around $2.00 at the time. The pound is now worth somewhere around $1.43. I don't know if the price has been reduced but I wouldn't be surprised if he was more willing to deal now.
My point is that if the sales people can use it as a selling point so should the buyer be able to when things have reversed. I don't think you will get 50% off but there will come a time when they will have to reduce the price in some manner be it a discount or a lower sticker price if the won stays where it is or goes lower.
What matters is that right now if Hyundai sells a car at the sticker price they will get approximately 50% more Korean won for it than they did for mine on the last day of July.
Here is the way it works out; in July I paid approximately 40,800,000 won ($40,000) for my car. Today the price would be 62,000,000 won.
The 40,800,000 won that I paid in July would be worth $26,322.58 today.
I wouldn't expect to pay $26,322.58 today but I would expect that a buyer armed with this information might get a better price than I did in July.
