Hi Guys:

I have a question about the AQS. I normally leave my climate control on Auto. When I start my car, I notice that I can switch on AQS while its set to Auto. However, after a while, AQS will go off and then I can never turn that BACK on while its on AUTO. Same with the air recirulation button. Why is that? I thought, even if things are on AUTO, i should be able to select any feature I want, when ever needed cancelling the auto.

any thoughts would be helpful

OK, I just looked it up in the manual. It's the Air Quality System. Somehow this guy knows when to let outside air in or not, if there are bad fumes around.

I'm going to try keeping it on and see what happens.
 
The same thing happens with my car... the AQS never stays on when using "Auto".

Here's what www.hmaservice.com has to say about it:

1. A.Q.S is located at center support in front of the engine radiator, and detects hazardous elements in ambient air providing output signal to control.

2. It will detect sulfurous acid gas, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon and allergen.

There nothing on the specifics of how it operates, just some specs on voltages when the AQS is activated when it detects the above noted gasses.

I'm trying to recall, but I think I remember when I started my car in conditions which caused the system to go into the recirculation mode by default (i.e., starting the car in hot conditions with the A/C on), I was unable to select the AQS button until the car had cooled down to the point where the recirculation became an optional selection (i.e., I could turn it on or off). Once that point was reached the AQS button could be turned on. My memories are foggy on this, so this is just a best guess.
 
Just re-read the owner's manual (page 4-97). Apparently there is a "defogging logic" that in certain conditions prevents the system from going into the recirculation mode.

Since the AQS controls recirculation, if the "defogging logic" is preventing activation of the recirculation mode, then the AQS and recirc buttons would logically be deactivated and unselectable. This is most likely what's causing the issue.

The book says you can turn the "defogging logic" off and on by doing the following:
1. Turn on the ignition
2. Select defrost mode (press the FRONT defrost button)
3. Press and hold the A/C button while simultaneously pressing the recirculation button 5 times within 3 seconds.
 
Interesting, but how do you know which mode you are in? Is there some indication that the "Defogging Logic" is activated or not?
 
For the Tech package systems, use the bottom/right button on the center console to get to the A/C display page - the one with the small profile view of the car. You'll see "AQS" letters on the right/center when that's active. And if the "defogging logic" is active & resisting driver commands, you'll see a flashing windshield defogger symbol (similar to the one on the regular defogger button below the LCD screen) when it's resisting you.

If I remember right, the regular defogger button's light might blink too. I don't experience the defogger logic much - living in SoCal and not using my Genesis as the daily driver. It's a fair weather weekend cruiser... or long distance vacation runner.

Cool! Did you find that out by accident? I've checked both the Owner's Manual and the DIS manual and found nothing like this noted.

thanks a lot guys. you guys are great on this forum. I do remember reading about the defrogger and recirc. However, wanted to make sure !!!
 
EVERY auto I've owned you could never "recirculate" air when in the Defrost mode. Otherwise, you're just "re-fogging" the glass. The air has to be heated (and some run through the ac compressor too) in order to "dry" the air and get rid of the moisture that causes the glass to fog in the first place. So if the AQS senses a foul smell, and shuts down the outside air, then seems to me you are recirculating by default. But if defrost is needed, (safety issue?) then that would overrule the AQS and you could not recirculate. I'm just glad all this is taken care of for me by the computer!

I almost never use the AQS button. Only when I start to smell diesel fumes, or things like that. I always just keep the Auto button on. With the Auto button on, the Recycle mode will go on and off by itself. (When the A/C starts to struggle, the Recycle will come on without you pushing the Recycle button).

As for the "Defrost" mode. Last year when I was in NW Texas and NM, in the winter, I found that there was no need for me to push the Defrost button. When I would start out in the morning, in Auto mode, the Defrost came on by itself. Don't ask me how, but the system senses that the windshield needs to be defrosted, and it came on, and after everything was clear, it would just go off.

This Auto mode is smarter than you think.

Bingo, I completely agree. The auto mode is actually pretty damn impressive. Does everything for you (as "AUTO" should right?) The mode is very intelligent.
