If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello guys,

I've just purchased a new Genesis G70 2.0T Prestige, but I have an issue with auto dimming, it is TOO dark at night, I was reading the manual but I can't find anything related to disabling this feature.

Is there any solution to disable it because it's really dangerous in my situation.

Thanks

I don't find they dim very much at all. Are you running an illegal tint?

I know in my 2015 that if I hold the off button for 3 seconds it turns off the autodim. I rarely use the dim feature as it's too dark with my window tint (35%)

surprisinguy

You are correct, my car doesn't have that switch. I'll see if I can find it some where else in my car.

I had a problem with auto dimming too. Couldn't stand it before my tint and now that I got 25% tint it's even worse. I have a 2020 G70 2.0 Sport. I simply unplugged the connection which you can access by pulling out the cover that goes to the part that connects to the windshield behind the mirror. It disconnects the power to the entire mirror but doesn't affect the side mirrors or anything else that I could tell. I'm fine not having homelink function for my garage door since it didn't work well (I'm almost positive somethings wrong on my garage opener), and I don't care for the first three buttons (the tow truck, point of interest, and the SOS buttons).

I asked my Genesis Service Manager and he confirmed that there's no way of disabling the auto dimming function on the G70, so this may be your best option. However, you can also try putting a piece of black tape over the sensor on the back of the mirror and the sensor on the front (it's hidden right behind the actual mirror face at the top middle. If you shine a flashlight at the mirror you can see it). But I didn't try doing this. I'd rather disconnect power to the mirror than to have a piece of tape on it. I hope this helps!

really? mine don't dim dark enough even with 20% on the side windows. damn a-holes and their ebay crap HIDs blind the hell out of me daily.

There was another thread discussing tinting that brought up this issue with the auto-dimming mirror.

The dim feature is calibrated by the difference in illumination between the sensors; the sensor on the front of the mirror looks through the (now) tinted back window, but the sensor on the back of the mirror looks through the untinted front window. If you place a piece of tint across the sensor on the back of the mirror, you will bring both sensors back to receiving the same amount of transmitted light and the mirrors will be less likely to dim in situations where it isn't really necessary.

I actually did put three layers of tape on the sensor that faces the front windshield (I only had white athletic tape as I was on my way home from playing basketball!). I hadn’t located the other sensor at the time so it was left uncovered. The dimming still functioned as per usual. It’s so damn dark. Very dangerous. I can try again with black tape another time.

I never really have an issue with glare anyway. If someone does drive behind me with glare, it’s only temporary. I can change lanes and let them drive ahead so I’ll gladly forgo this technology.

This all is weird to me... My auto dim mirrors don't dim too much at all, and I find them to be very helpful when I have some huge ass lifted truck roll up inches away from the back of my car with his shitty aftermarket HIDs or blue halogen bulbs. In fact, in those situations my mirrors could certainly go even darker, but I really think they're fantastic the way they are now. Under normal situations, like driving on the highway or freeway at night and someone with extra bright lights is behind me, it dims the mirrors appropriately and I can still see things out of the mirrors.

FWIW I have 40% tint on all side and back windows. No windshield tint.

I have the same problem and would like to be able to switch the auto dim off. Which “off” button are you speaking off?

Hello -
I have a 2022 Genesis GV70 3.5 Sport Prestige and my rear view mirror is always dimmed and it almost impossible to see at night as it is so dark. I too to dealer and they cannot locate any info on the rear view mirror in the manual and don't have any suggestions. During the day, if I wear sunglasses, I can barely see. It is almost like there is a tinted film on it. Any help would be appreciated. There are no buttons on back or sides.

Frame-less mirrors don't have on/off buttons anymore. I have one on my 2022 SF Calligraphy, and it also dims the mirrors some in daylight. However, since I tinted the front windows (30% ceramic), I don't have an issue anymore. I don't think there are any settings under 'vehicle' for the mirrors, for what I can remember, but you can carefully check your infotainment. If not, then the only way to prevent dimming during daylight is to block the rear sensor with a piece of electrical tape or such. You'd have to use a flashlight to locate it on the glass itself, which is typically at the top center of the mirror. The front sensor is for night driving, so typically not an issue, but you could block it too, and mirrors would never dim. Hope this helps.

I agree, I have the same issue with it.

Mirrors with auto-dim used to have a freaking button to turn it on or off, but not anymore. That's stupid, because that darn thing is nearly useless. Glad I rarely drive at night, because with my tinted windows and that crap, can't see sh*t behind me. Ha ha. But my mirror also has the HomeLink buttons there, plus the BlueLink ones, so cannot disconnect it. If I was a regular night driver, I'd look for a solution, but thankfully no need to do anything in my case :).

Mirrors with auto-dim used to have a freaking button to turn it on or off, ...
Actually, to begin with they had a sensitivity switch. I don't remember how many levels it had, but it was more than one. Later, as you say, the level switch was changed to just an on/off switch, and after that no switch at all. I am probably one of the ones to blame for that. I don't have any non-factory tint, and I never adjusted the level switch or used the off switch. It's always just worked for me. There must be enough cases like mine and too few cases like yours, that they decided manual control was not needed.

You could rewire the reverse signal to the mirror to be an on/off signal that you could switch.

Agreed. Count me as one that loves auto dimming mirrors. Every car I've driven that has it has always worked well for me. I wasn't even aware there might have been adjustment levels in some of them. I've never felt the need. They just work.

What I did experience was the exact opposite. A while back, the auto-dimming mirror in my Stinger stopped working for some reason, and the bright headlights at night bothered me to no end. There is no flippy thing to switch to "night mode" manually, so it was either blinding headlights or no rearview mirror at all. I normally avoid taking any of my vehicles to the dealership service dept, unless it was absolutely necessary. That... was absolutely necessary!

YMMV.
