  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Automatic downshifting in Sport Mode

I just completed break-in mileage (600 miles). To faithfully follow the instruction in the manual that the rpm is to be kept at 2000-4000 as much as possible, I use the manual gate to go to sport mode driving at slow speed in our community. Sometimes I use the 3rd gear and sometimes I used the 2nd gear when the speed was really slow (at around 20 mph.) When I had to make a stop, the car would automatically downshift to 1st gear from the 3rd gear which was spelled out in the manual and there was no surprise. However, if the car was in 2nd gear, it would stay at 2nd gear even when a stop was made unless I shifted it down myself, and I could not find any mention of that in the manual.

I am not too bothered with it, as likely I would seldom use the manual gate after this break-in period. Is that something I should investigate further though?

I wouldn't worry about it unless it is a constant issue.

it may be the ability to start in 2nd gear for a slower start.

I puzzled since my 2007 Sonata Limited downshifts from 2nd to 1st at stops during manual mode. I wonder what the thinking is to keep at 2nd gear during stops, if this is a deliberate design and not some problem peculiar to my car. I wish they spell that out in the manual if it is indeed deliberate. The only thing I can think of is for incidences when someone prefers to drive in 2nd gear all the way at slow speed, in deep snow perhaps. Then, as you said, it provides the ability to start in 2nd gear for a slower start instead of spinning the wheels. Make sense? But then, isn't that redundant since he can choose snow mode.

Incidentally, can someone verify theirs behaving the same way so I know it is not a peculiar glitch with my car? Thanks in advance.

Mine behaves in the same way. 100% sure it is not a problem with your car.

Luxury vehicles often start in 2nd gear because A) it's smoother to shift less, and B) they're technically capable of it without any reliability concerns.

I actually have times where I shift to manual mode specifically to prevent starting in 2nd, because there's only enough visibility to punch it and get in 100% safely. Well... that and I just like accelerating like a bat out of hell.

1st gear's got the beans and second doesn't; I wouldn't know except I had several starts in this exact situation that were quite a bit slower than anticipated. There's no other explanation for it other than the car started in 2nd. In automatic mode there are certain conditions that lead to 2nd being selected and now I'll start experimenting to find out what they are.

I cannot remember where i read this, and i am pretty sure it was not a Hyundai, but staying in 2nd gear manual (manumatic?) was called "slippery or iced surface" drive mode.

When the Roads are Bad (snow)... and I forgot to take the truck to work... I will start in 2nd... and then almost immediately shift in to 3rd... keeping the RPM down so to reduce wheel spin.

works well enough to get me home to 4x4

Can anyone else also confirm this?
I have 2015 genesis 3.8 awd and mine always start on 1st in automatic mode and manual mode.
I like to start on 2nd gear all the time so i have to use manual mode and shift up to 2nd gear at a stop

Correct. Curious though, why? It usually is done on slippery surfaces but I see no advantage for normal driving. What do you know that all the engineers don't?

I feel like it is way smoother to start on 2nd and go through the gears how i want it in manual mode vs let computer do it for me

Just hold down your drive mode button for 3 to 5 seconds and it will automatically switch into snow mode. Presto. No manual shifting.
