- 1G Genesis Sedan (2009-2014)
Ladies & gentlemen, after a 6 month hiatus, I am back to searching for a clean, well kept 1st gen Genesis sedan. I had to postpone my purchase back in June, but am now ready to find a nice Genesis again.
Back in June, I had my heart set on the 3.8. Based on the research I had done earlier this year, I loved the reliability of the Aisin transmission and had narrowed down my choices to a pre GDI model, i.e. before 2012.
Upon further research, however, I started to learn more from owners of the 4.6 and all its virtues, from the smoothness of the V8 to the ZF transmission it was paired with. So the 2011 4.6 model started to look very good to me as well, given that the mpg penalty was negligible.
SO here we are at the end of the year, and my dilemma is just that: I love the 2011 4.6, but also realize they are fairly hard to find. I know many of you have given the 2013+ models big kudos, both the 3.8 and 5.0 powerplants. My question to some of you present owners is this - I am a bit cautious about jumping onto the GDI bandwagon, as carbon buildup has shown to be a minor concern. Secondly, the newer 8 speed transmissions, how are they holding up? I have read that Hyundai has ironed out the kinks of the 2012 model, and that from 2013 on they are fairly reliable.
Regardless, I am clearly aware that ALL Genesis owners are very happy with their purchase of the car, so there are no bad choices. Either way you get a great car, that much is apparent. I'm just curious how the 8 speed transmission compares to the ZF tranny in its smoothness and reliability. Moreover, what comparisons can anyone give me between the older 4.6 and the current 5.0 models.
I'm all ears . . . let the feedback begin. A happy, belated Christmas to you all, and a wonderful New Year as well!
