If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

One of the most popular talk radio stations is also the most powerful is AM 580. But I can get good reception and in some location get no reception at all. Does anyone else notice bad AM reception-- the worse in any car I have had. The service dept. stated that this is common for most of the new 2011 Genesis. Is this true??

Have no problems with am in the Athens, Atlanta Georgia area.

I have a 2009 Genesis, not a 2011, but I get above-average reception in the metro Atlanta area, and the sound quality on AM is superior to what I've heard in other cars I've owned (Acura, Toyota, Honda, Nissan). Sorry to hear you're having problems.

Have you checked to see if your station also simulcasts an HD feed on an FM HD station? Here in Atlanta, for instance, 640AM simulcasts on 94.9 HD2 or 94.9 HD3 (I forget which it is), so I can hear them in superior sound quality through the HD radio.

My experience mirrors what cliffbig posted: my 2009 Tech picks up many more AM stations than I knew existed in the local area. The receiver seems to have outstanding sensitivity. No fade/drop-out issues either for the few times I've used AM.

My windows do have an aftermarket tint-- would that really make a difference?

Yes, since the antenna is integrated in the rear glass, some metallic tint films adversely affect radio reception. There's a warning in the owner's manual about that.

Which model (3.8 or 4.6) and which trim do you have so we can get an idea of which radio tuner you're talking about?

I have a 2011 genesis 4.6. I looked in the manual and did not see any thing about the rear window. What are my options beside taking off the tint?

Rear window aftermarket tinted by any chance?

Re: HD Radio, depending on the trim and year, HD Radio may or may not be included.

I bought a 2011 Genesis v6 used, could get no am reception on my nav radio. Found out after sale. Found out the back window tint killed the am reception, and was put on after market. The dealer says he will remove the tint when "the weather gets warmer" so the back window can be uniformally hot. We will see. All other reception is finel
WARNING TO OTHERS: If you are going to have the windows tinted, have then guarantee that it will not kill the radio reception.

The only film that interfears with electronics including AM radio is a metallic film, which in the owners manual of the Genesis states to NOT use. It's not like dealers read the owners manual though:rolleyes: They should take it off for free, or at least pay for the job done at a tint shop and you should NOT have to wait until it's warmer. You shouldn't have to pay for someone else's mistake.

I wouldn't take off the tint. I bought my 2011 4.6 last week and noticed from day 1--before getting my windows tinted--that my favorite AM station didn't come in well.

IT'S NOT THE TINT!

So, I've been using my iPhone to listen to that station via an app.

Sure would like to know if there is a fix for this. I just assumed that the sharkfin antenna on the roof was the culprit. Never drove a car with an antenna like that before.

Hmm....I actually considered that possibility. Those sharkfin antennas...they seem like a huge add-on for a novelty. You would think that they could come up with something less obtrusive.

Anyhow, I guess this just reinforces the point that Hyundai, in general, or the type of glass antenna they use, just produces poor AM reception.

Guess we're stuck with it.

They will, as soon as BMW and MB change their's.

I am the one who initiated this thread. I have a 318 2011 sedan. One concern I have is if someone other than the dealer removes the metallic tint, it may screw up the rear window defroster. Should I be worried about this or should a professional tint shop be able remove the tint without the damage described?

The only am radio station I listen to in San Antonio is 550 and unfortunately they do not simulcast on FM. My workaround has been to use tune-in radio app on my iphone to stream the station and that works well through my car nav/radio.

When the weather turns warmer, I am going to take it back to the dealer and have a showdown over removing it in "warmer weather" . I bought the car at Red McCombs Hyundai West, in San Antonio

This is my first Hyundai. I have owned two camrys and I still own a tacoma. It is obvious that the service departments ( at least in San Antonio) don't hold a candle to Toyotas. What has been other experience with Hyundai service department?

Also, does anyone know the reason why the Genesis dosen't have daylight running lights? All Auto does is turn it on or off when it gets dark/light. My Daughter has a 2011 Sonata SE, and it has daylight running lights?

I don't know how the dealer is planning to handle removing your film off the rear window, but since the car is new, so is the tint. This means the film will come off in one piece, however the adhesive will be left behind depending on how the film is removed. There are many methods to do this, but the only way I can think of the rear defrost would be damaged is using a razor, or having 20 year baked on film (which you don't have of course).

As them how they plan on handling this, then figure if that method is right for you.

Let's back up a bit 1st......Do we have a positive identity on the film composition, i.e. metallic? If you take a picture or two and post them on here, I probably could identity it. The film will be more grey in color and also pretty reflective. I'd hate for you to have the film removed and it not solve your problem.

Metallized tint on windows will play havoc with radio and cellphone, radar detector, and GPS...
