Bad smelling AC

Hi guys,

Whenever I turn on my genesis, I am getting a pretty bad smell these days when the AC turns on. I googled around for this issue and looks like it might be due to mildew formed somewhere near the air ducts? Has any of you seen this issue and resolved it? Do I have to take it to dealer or I can do it myself?

Just from reading here...

Try changing your cabin air filter which sits behind the glove box. And you could try spraying Lysol in the vents.

No permanent solution i believe. Lysol only temporary if at all. I've kept it at bay by never using auto setting on climate and only running a/c with recirculation always off. Or i drive with unit off and windows down.

Sucks and only thing i hate about the car so far.

I brought this same issue up with the dealer today on my 2015 5.0 Ultimate while taking it in for the sunroof rattle.

The service rep's response was that they have a treatment to get rid of the mildew on the evap coils, but Hyundai won't cover it. This seems pretty crazy for a 1 year-old car with a sticker of $55.7k.

He didn't seem to like my point of it being a major design flaw.

I guess I will by a 6-pack of Lysol and make it a routine treatment.....anyone ever say that about their Lexus, Benz, or BMW?

It is design "defect" but there is no real solution to fix the defect. Spraying disinfectant to kill the mildew is not a solution, just a treatment. I wonder if the G80 or G90 has the same problem. A permanent fix problem involves a redesign of the entire routing of the HVAC system behind the dash and in the engine compartment.

Pretty much rules out the Genesis 2G for me until they fix it, which may take until 3G. Where I live, the AC is used about 9 months out of the year. But my next vehicle will probably be a SUV/CUV anyway.

Try turning off the A/C (and just let the outside air blow in) for the last 2-3 minutes of your drive. It's a pain to do, but it worked in a Toyota I owned.

So far, no issue with my 2G Ultimate.

I'm on my 43rd car since 2004.....if I have to change my AC settings as I approach my destination to avoid a stinky car it will likely be on to #44.

Great car, but these little issues that they fail to address are going to quickly ruin the build-up of their supposed luxury brand. If they are trying to sway people over from true luxury brands they will have to get better with servicing their current owners.

Haha, yeah there aren't many that can beat me on that figure. I had a good chuckle at the dealership today when the service rep could t figure out why my VIN didn't match my record in the system. This is actually my 2nd 2015 Casablanca White Genesis. I bought a 3.8 from them in Feb for a ridiculous price, sold it in April for a $5k profit, then bought a preowned 2015 5.0 from another dealer. The guy is probably still confused....

I had two Infiniti's that had the same issue, both different models. Drove me away from the brand forever. I'm now having the issue with my 4 month old G2 I leased new. So dissapointed.......
