  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
    If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a Level 2 charger in my garage that I use to charge my GV60 to 80% when it is down to near 20%. I also have an EA DC fast charger 10 minutes from my home which affords me free charging for 3 years. Home charger is more convenient, fast charger is free, but what's the best routine for battery health? Should I charge to 100% occasionally even if not taking a road trip?

For convenience, I would just charge at home.

But if you really want to take advantage of free charging (and why not?), I would do the same routine as home (i.e. keep it between 20-80).

Charging >80 would mean spending a lot more time at the DCFC.

DC Fast charging degrades the battery quicker. If it is a lease, or you do not plan to keep it long term you might as well take advantage of the free charging if it doesn't inconvenience you. I plug in at home every night and charge to 80%

I have mine set to charge to 70% as that seems to be the most conservative guidance. The general consensus for maximizing longevity seems to be to level 2 charge and keep the battery between 20-70%.

I agree with the comment that, if this is just a short-term vehicle for you, might as well take advantage of free charging.

This is what Genesis in Canada sent me as their official recommended position on charging.

Thanks for posting this information.

In summary:
  • Leave the car plugged on a Level 2 charger when parked in hot temperatures;
  • Avoid DC fast chargers;
  • Keep SOC (State Of Charge) between 25 and 75%.
They also mention that eight years of standard charging will give us 10% more battery life compared to 8 years of using fast charging... I can live with that so I will not avoid DC fast chargers.

I will add one thing that has been mentioned elsewhere: it is recommended that occasionally to charge to 100% to even out all the battery cells....as long as you don't leave the car at 100%

that is a good summary

Do you leave it plugged in all night even after charging is complete? I use my Level 2 to fill up and then unplug it but a friend said I should leave it plugged in all the time in case the vehicle needs power it will use the Level 2 instead of the battery. It never occurred to me to leave it plugged in once the charging stopped.
Thanks, John

Yeah, once again, we get slightly incomplete information. Definitely agree, the batteries need the equalization & probably the odd fast charge to shake things up.

I’m starting to get myself a little mixed up, too much research…
Something stands out in my mind that, if plugged in, the onboard temperature control will regulate the pack when necessary, as in winter. I can see I’m going to need a cheat sheet.

You know I do 😊

Realistically it's all going to depend on how you use the car.

Mines a 4 year lease, so I'm not going to worry too much.

70-80% battery is not enough range for me to realistically get to work and then to a fast charger for the drive home, especially during winter.

I charge to 85-90% and more than likely 100% during the winter, but I'm not driving the car every day.

I charge once or twice a week dc fast as a top up charge and the rest at home.

Very useful charging video from Genesis.

This is true, but I definitely think YMMV.

Obviously battery chemistry and overall architecture is different from our Tesla Model 3, but about 40,000 miles of our car was DCFC (Tesla Supercharger) over the last 4 years (no Level 1/2 charging available in public parking where car is kept). Doing some readings of the pack's health resulted in a ~8.5% degradation.

I will say it's a lot lower (the degradation) than I thought it'd be given the fact that I would even routinely charge it to 100% despite Tesla's warnings against frequently doing so - but for our new GV60, we're going to try our best to "slow charge" it whenever we can, especially since we're finally able to get home charging made available soon.

How often is too often to charge to 100%? I drive to the lake on the weekends. We have a L2 home chargers in the city and at the lake. I charge to 100% before I leave and then before I return home. Is that too much? Less of this from now till Spring.

I think it’s absolutely fine

If you need the range provided by a full battery, the discussion is moot.
From what I’ve come across, it seems the concern is more about time spent at high/low SOC, so if you’re driving it soon after the charge, I don‘t think you have too much to worry about.

according to the manual at least 2-3 times a month
