  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

When my 2012 Genesis 3.8 was 6 weeks old, the battery died completly while in my garage. The dealer found nothing wrong other than the totally dead battery.

Has anyone else had a similar premature battery failure like this??

Yes, check the post about the missing rubber stop that attaches to the underside of the hood on the drivers side (its small, about 3/8" in diameter) that turns on the alarm and puts the car in sleep mode as it depresses a small switch when hood is closed. If your's is missing then the battery will die again and again, and agian.

Here's another possibility. I learned by experience a few months after I bought my car that it's possible to close the trunk lid so that it looks closed but may not be latched. The interior trunk lights are actually controlled by the latch mechanism and they only go off if the latch COMPLETELY engages. If these lights don't turn off, they will definitely drain the battery.

I believe there were some other documented causes of battery problems, especially on 2012's, involving loose wires or something. You can search the forum with Google to find the threads.

See the following two threads for info on the hood alarm switch bumper:

The rubber bit is just a round cylinder that screws into the hood part-way between the front corner and windshield on the driver's side. There is a large one in the corner (supports the hood when closed); the alarm one is a bit smaller in diameter.

Thank you so much for this information. My rubber stop was missing and after reading your post, I was able to call the dealer and stop by and have a new one installed in 5 minutes. That sure beats leaving my car at the dealer and having them wait two days before the battery was fully drained. I wish I had read this before buying a new battery. :)

That has happened to me. Did not use the car around the holidays for a few days and the trunk was not completely shut. Ended up draining the battery. Fortunately the Hyundai Assistance guys showed up and started the car.

What does this say about the factory QA / Inspection process? Or is this a part easily lost?

Can be bumped and lost. I glued mine in with contact glue.

in case anyone's keeping score - this happened to me today. dead battery after car sat ~4 days (at least it was sunny out - easy to charge).

short story: was due to trunk open  altho i'm certain i never knowingly opened it. i've had issues with this since i bought it ... trunk seems to open at various/sundry times unannounced; have assumed cockpit error up to now (maybe i hit the trunk button unawares) but will keep a closer eye on it going forward.

Veed, I have found my trunk "popped open" twice when I least expected it. I blamed myself both times thinking somehow I had pressed the trunk release, and held it since I always have my keys in my pocket. After looking at your post, I am now wondering if the trunk opened itself w/o my being involved?

My new battery, so far, is doing fine. However, we now turn the delay lights off (then right back to auto to keep them off but ready) when we park in our garage. The delay on my Genesis is V-E-R-Y long and the dealer says it cannot be shortened. It would be fine if the lights stayed on half (or less) the amount of the time set by the factory.

phil.... thx for the confirmation. wondered if i was hitting the trunk release by accident. i keep a close eye on it now, thinking it may be a faulty/weird fob. i can force a lights out by manually locking up (but i have a tech pkg - not sure if that's part of the deal or not; i really should read the manual).

I have been slamming the trunk since I bought the car. Have never had a battery issue, but that little instrument panel image if the open trunk is a little demon I don't like to look at.

I had the dash light just a few days ago. I hadn't been anywhere around the trunk but it was in fact open. Never did explain it.

I rotated the tires on my '12 3.8 sedan last week and hadn't driven it since. When I went to get in the trunk this am- it wouldn't open. When I went up front to sit down and use the switch in the door panel- I found the seat as far up forward as it could possibly go.??? I'm 6'4" so I started to yell at the (short) wife until I remembered that I was the last to drive it. The battery was now dead. I assume since the trunk wouldn't open, that wasn't an open trunk issue. So now, I'll check to see if the tab on the underside of the hood has gone missing. In the meantime- I'm putting a battery charger on it. Any other Ideas?

Long ago there were a couple posts on this forum about seats moving with a mind of their own - like moving all the way forward while the car was being driven! Some were due to issues with the switch on the seat itself, others apparently had to do with the "seat easy access" that moves the seat back to make it easier to get in/out of the vehicle. It's possible your seat controller switch, wiring to/from the switch, or the "memory" module (it handles both the seat position memory and power mirror position memory) has issues leading to the seat motor running full-time... draining the battery. And probably overheating the motor too.

I charged the battery for several hours, and in two days-no problems.

So far, the new battery put in my 2012 Genny (last Nov) has been OK. However, we are going to be in Europe soon for two weeks. I am already worried the battery might be dead when we get back. I have never owned a battery charger in my life (now 66) but I might need to purchase one. In Nov, that battery was completely shot and had to be replaced, not just run down. If my battery is dead after the two week period, something is terribly wrong. I will post to this site either way. Phil

My 4.6 sat for 16 days while we were out of town and all was fine when I returned. Unless the little rubber tab is gone or the trunk is left open or light left on inside then I think your battery will be ok.
