I've been using a Curt trailer hitch solely for the purpose of mounting a bike rack for over 3 years without incident until yesterday. Most rack instructions sensibly recommend a support strap extending from a clip at the front edge of the trunk lid back to the hitch support post. I had no problems with it and it never left a mark on the paint. Yesterday, however, I carelessly failed to check the position of the clip after I opened the trunk. When the power trunk closed, the clip which had twisted was forced against the bottom edge of the rear window. Boom! The tempered glass was left hanging in the frame in a million pieces. Many of those fell into the back of the car the next time we closed the front door. Fortunately, the replacement is a lot less expensive and simpler than the front windshield which was a nightmare when that was done in Florida a couple of years back. The moral of the story, don't mount the clip on the support strap until after you've closed the trunk.
