  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi all

Went to the Florida Keys last weekend and when I came back to the car, the hood was full of bird excrements (to be nice). As soon s I got home, I washed the car and applied a very soft rubbing compound to the affected areas as well as wax.

If you look at it closely, you can still see where the crap burnt the paint.

What do you experts recommend?

Take it to a professional detailer and have them assess and fix the issue.

If you want to do this yourself, the key is determine what the damage is (remaining bird doo residue or paint/clear coat damaged). Put your finger in a plastic bag, wet damaged area and move finger/bag over the damaged area. If you feel a bump you've have residue, if a hole/divot you have paint damage. Depending on level of paint damage (clear coat only or clear coat and shallow paint loss) you can improve, but an optimum repair would require re-paint.

Start with the safest/gentle fix and work toward more aggressive methods.
  1. Clay bar the entire panel where the damage is. This will only remove surface residue.
  2. Use a bug and tar cleaner. This will only remove surface residue.
  3. Use progressively coarser rubbing/polishing compounds. This will remove surface residue and can improve damaged paint. In the past I have done more damage using this method and now leave this type of work to professionals.
Finish with isopropyl/rubbing alcohol to clean. Re-wax after you complete the repair/cleaning.

I have 3 bird crap stains in my paint (purchased my sport used). I have a professional detailer coming to paint correct & ceramic coat my car 3/11. I will let you know if he was able to buff it out easily & see what he says. I would hate to ceramic coat the marks only to solidify the neglect from the previous owner haha...
