In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hi Folks -

So a friendly parts manager at a local dealership and I were talking about my new R-Spec. He saw that I was an enthusiast and said that he has a contact at Borla. Sure enough I soon found myself in email exchange with said contact. I have an offer from them that provides me with an exhaust system if I give my car as a prototype for 2 weeks. There are two down-sides in my mind - first the location is a 3 hour drive and I would have to rent a car for two weeks. Secondly I am concerned that the exhaust would be too loud. They would not be tailoring the new system to my desires but instead would be using my car as the prototype for developing a system to sell aftermarket.

I know that this is really a question of opinion on what one would want their car to sound and perform like. However, I am still putting this out to you for discussion and thoughts. After all, what else is this site for anyway?

I will be pondering this question in the next couple of days. If I decide against it, I will pass on my contact to someone here if they want to take advantage of this offer.

Cheers,
Newman

Why don't you just enjoy your beautiful car for 6 months before thinking about dramatic changes which will result in yet to be determined consequences? I understand the nature of obsession and upgraditis. Give it some time and it'll pass.

i say go for it!
be a guinea pig so that the rest of us can benefit :D

Please check out the below thread. Personally I wouldn't give up my car for two weeks for a $1000. exhaust system. I've listened to clips from both Borla and Magnaflow and the Borla sounded more quiet.(?) I prefer a more quiet exhaust but one I can at least hear, which currently I cannot. I'm waiting for a secondary cat delete kit and then I'll see if that helps.

Here's a link to the folks that are making the cat delete kit.

Simple answer - no. Leave the ultimate sleeper as a sleeper!

Borla is too loud for a luxury sedan.

Search YouTube for Borla Genesis sedan and be the judge.

I agree. Having just come from a real modern muscle car with a 6.0L V8 where I most often ran long-tube headers and straight-pipe, I REALLY appreciate the quietness of this car.

I've considered Magnaflow for the Genesis, but I just don't think I'll touch the exhaust.

It's something you'll grow out of love for.

I also agree that the add on exhaust would be too loud for a luxury sedan like the Genesis. Dont get me wrong with the r-spec I kinda wish it was a tad more gutsy sound to it, but its not a Camaro or Mustang and IMHO should not sound like one.

My problem with exhaust like Borla is that you get that aggressive sound all the time. I would love a system that was quiet below 3,000 RPM then had some kind of passthrough open to get some noise. I just don't want exhaust drone as I'm commuting along on the freeway but damn would I love it when I've got my foot in it.

Basically, the 2012 exhaust, including RSpec, is almost identical to earlier exhaust except for the exhaust tips. The only thing Borla and MagnaFlow have to do is to change exhaust tips. Perhaps their quad tips will fit and will look good, but maybe not.
In my opinion, Borla's sound is a bit more raspy than MagnaFlow's. Perhaps MagnaFlow's "X" pipe makes the difference. Whatever, the most important factor for consideration is how it sounds inside the car. Both Borla and MagnaFlow will drone at high load/low rpm (lugging). Drone seems to be present in all aftermarket exhausts, except maybe Corsa (no app. for Genesis).
I bought a MagnaFlow (now deeply discounted on eBay) for my 2011 and was disappointed with the drone. I changed the rear mufflers to Dynomax VT. It was a custom installation. These mufflers virtually eliminate the drone. The install was tricky and I could not use the quad tips from the MagnaFlow.

good to know!
i guess i won't be getting an aftermarket exhaust.
i recently read that a Maserati uses a passthrough (i'm not sure what that means) such that the exhaust noise is louder above 3000 RPM. i wish something like that exists for the genesis, but i assume it wouldn't be cheap.

Some companies such as Maserati and even in the new ZR1 Corvette utilize a type of valve (butterfly) that's linked to the throttle position which controls how much to open the valves. This would be fantastic on the Genesis, but don't think we'll ever see it on there.

DO IT!
Make the R-speck legit!

Do it!

YES, YES, YES!

order the pipes, take them to the dealer, I paid < $40 for them to install, took minutes.
I have no clue where losing your vehicle for two weeks came from (reference to previous post in this thread)

I mentioned that I am using Dynomax VT mufflers, which have virtually eliminated drone.
I did not mention that these mufflers use somewhat the same technology as the optional Corvette exhaust (aprox. $1100), Maserati, and Jaguar XK. These cars have an electric motor/solonoid that operates a flap. The flap opens on wide open throttle. Dynomax also has a flap that is partially closed during light throttle, and opens fully on wide open. The flap is controlled by a spring, which is entirely contained within the muffler. I have heard Jaguar owners complain about the muffler motor failing causing the flap to vibrate. I was concerned about the life of the Dynomax spring. Dynomax says their springs have undergone testing of over 1,000,000 openings without failure. But, should the springs fail you will have to buy a new muffler, at a cost of about $125. For those interested do search the web on these VT mufflers and do talk to the Dynomax people.
I plan on buying a RSpec when they become more available in Oregon. On doing this I will change the exhaust. I will replace the redundant rear cats with a Motorsports Authority cat delete. I will have the severe dimples in front of the resonator cut out and replaced with straight pipe; and, finally, I will have my exhaust man make a new exhaust aft of the resonator incorporating Dynomax VT mufflers. I expect my total cost will be considerably less than $750.

Rey,
Your above post sounds good. I'm waiting to get the Cat Delete from Motor Sports Authority now. I've been asked to dyno the car before and after and the parts will be free. Hope to see them soon. Last week they told me they had to make some up.
What do you think about removing the resonator behind the secondary cats and leaving the stock mufflers at the bumper in place?
Thanks

Skywagon,
The central resonator is a basic straight-through design with a balance connection, with little restriction. Most of the exhaust restriction is in the massive rear mufflers.
I see that Jegs is selling VT mufflers for just $89.
A reasonable mod for a central resonator delete is an "X pipe. MagnaFlow sells and "X" pipe separately, and it is included in the MagnaFlow kit. Better yet and not costing much more is MagnaFlow's X muffler/resonator which has the "X" enclosed within the muffler.
My research concluded that the "X" exhaust crossover offers a minor performance gain over a simple balance tube connection. The "X" seems to mellow exhaust sound a bit. Note, Jaguar has recently changed its XK exhaust from a balance connection to an "X" connection.

Rey,
Thanks much for the response. If you're willing, and have the time, and since you have the experience, would you be kind enough to advise which of the Dynomax VT mufflers would best fit near our bumpers. I went to their web site and there are quite a few to pick from. Also, I've read that our pipes are not stainless steel but "aluminized steel" (?). Never heard that term before but want to make sure what I'm dealing with when I attempt your suggested system.
Thanks again

Skywagon,
The correct Dynomax VT depends on your exhaust diameter. The stock 4.6 exhaust diameter at the rear muffler is 2.25", which requires the #17155 Dynomax. If your exhaust measures a full 2.50" like MagnaFlow and Borla, then you will need the #17156. So, measure your exhaust pipe diameter.
Dynomax sells another 2.50" pipe diameter muffler, which is two inches longer at 21". I am using the shorter 19" version - #17156 with my modified MagnaFlow exhaust system.
