  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I had a tire that developed an air leak. So I brought it to a tire shop. When I came back to pick up my car they told me they couldn't get the tire off because the wheel lock and the key were damaged. Has anyone else had a problem with a broken wheel lock or key?

I won't put them on my car because I know people that have had problems with them.

Theives also watch YouTube videos.

One of the first things I did when I got my G80 was to remove the locking lugs and replace them with the regular lugs. They hardly slow down the thieves, but they cause a lot of inconvenience at tire shops and such.

Thanks folks for replies and video. It took me a couple of hours and a lot of effort but I got all 4 of my wheel locks off. I think I will go back to just using the factory lug nuts. Thanks again.

I'm involved in a dispute regarding the Genesis branded wheel locks that were included with my GV60 purchase. A tire shop managed to remove two of them, but then they were stripped. Long story short, I had to have the car towed nearly 100 miles to the nearest Genesis dealer who had a master set of keys. The security on those bolts is amazing, but not when the key rounds out. Has anyone else dealt with this? Mine had a more or less 4-leaf clover design with rounded petals. The newer models seem more star shaped.

Are you saying that the key provided with the "locks" did not work correctly? Or, that you were not provided a key?

The key rounded out and would not move the lug bolts.

It sure seems like this should be a simple warranty issue.
Tire dealer blames Genesis and vice versa and I'm in the hole for $1,000

Wow, I just rotated my tires and one of my lock studs broke! The 'custom' shape insert came off the top of the wheel stud, it's a pressed spline into the stud body. I was able to get the wheel off but I didn't put that particular lock back on the car. I rotate my tires every 6K miles so they have been on/off a few times as I'm approaching 80K on my car.

Yikes!

Seems easy enough to defeat them. Instead of a tow, they should have asked a local kid to take them off.

The Genesis locks have a slip rings so the socket over approach doesn't work. the stud is deep in a narrow channel stops extraction unless you are willing to damage the wheels. They are awesome locks that the dealer added and ruined us when away from a dealer.

I did extensive research on how to remove the locking lug nuts when I lost my key. Left key on wheel and went for a drive (doh!). Dealer wanted $200USD to remove locking lug. I was getting ready to hammer a old socket onto the lug when I determined I could order a new key from the mfg. I just needed to register and provide key "serial #". $20 and a few days later problem fixed.

My Genesis locking lugs are NOT the slip ring type so the socket removal method would have worked IMO.

My conversation with Genesis was pleasant and productive. Genesis was generous with their part of the wheel lock mayhem, and conversations with the tire dealer's loss mitigation folks are under way. I'm optimistic that both the Tire folks and Genesis will fix my financial loss. Thanks, Genesis!
