  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Buy 2011 now or buy 2012 in the spring?

Hi folks,

This is my first time posting, but I have been reading the site for a few weeks as I was narowing down my new car options. I have taken a 2011 Genesis 4.6 out for a test drive and loved the car. After a few test drives and obsessing over car reviews I have decided that a Genesis will be my next car.

I am not in a rush to buy, but had originally thought that I would buy a new car by year end thinking that I would get a better deal in December. However, after reading about the 2012 Genesis, I am now wondering about holding off until it is released.

Is it worth waiting a few months to get the new 5.0L - 8 speed transmission, or should I get the 4.6 now? Any idea what month the 2012 will be released?

The big question mark is what will the 2012 cost? Right now you can get some amazing deals on 2011's. You ma need to wait till end of 2012 before you can enjoy similar savings on 2012's. Also, as the Genesis gets more established as a luxury car (as with Lexus, Infinity, Accura), the price will tend to go up and may never get back down to the levels now.

The only positive in terms of price is you will also have a better trade in value on a 2012 than on a 2011, so it may offset the premium you pay for a 2012.

I had a similar dilemma and finally decided that 0-60 in 5.7 seconds is fast enough, driving my 4.6 now, less than 1000 miles on car.

I like several things about the 2012, however I have always stayed away from the first year of a new engine or transmission regardless of brand. We keep our vehicles for at least 200,000 miles and the 6 speed ZF trans. in the 2011 has a good reliablity record. The new 8 speed is unproven. Anyway, I'm very happy with my 4.6 2011. If you sell or trade the before the powertrain warranty runs out then it does not matter.

I had the same question, though I'm in more of a hurry to buy. The answer depends on when we can really expect the '12 Genesis to be available on the street. If it were early spring, I'd probably wait and make a choice between an '11 and a '12. But I'm thinking it's going to be more like mid summer at the earliest.

I own a 2011 Genesis. It is such a good car, that I will probably buy another in March of 2011. If they change the Genesis in 2012, there is a good chance that they will introduce more problems than the 2011 has. I have seen this with Lexus.

My advice - If you like the 2011, buy it. A change in 2012 does not mean it will be for the better.

I'm in the same boat when my lease expires in Feb. Go with the '11 immediately? Buy this '09 and wait a couple (few?) months for the '12?

The appeal of waiting is the availability of AWD. The downside is that my positive $5K equity will dwindle with another model year introduced.

I'm not sure, but I'm leaning toward waiting.

I am still a prospective Genesis buyer, but perhaps the better option is waiting for the 5.0 liter to come out and then go for the 4.6 liter. With all of the attention going to the newer model, there should be great deals on the "old" one.

Thanks for the responses; this forum has been a wealth of information. It looks like I am going to go ahead and buy the 2011 4.6 sometime in December. I was looking at Titaniam Grey Metallic, but I think I have talked myself into the Phantom Black.

I have a 3.8 with 6spd and I can tell you that the shifts are soooo seemless in it's current form that I seriously doubt you'd notice/feel the difference in gears anyway...The 8 spd will likely just off-set the mpg penalty of the larger displacement 5.0. JMHO...

My .02 - this is common issue no matter what you're buying. By the time the 2012 comes out, there will be great speculation about what might be better in the 2013. You could wait forever to make a decision. You just need to get yourself ready and pull the trigger - when the dust settles you will be just as happy no matter which way you go.

I agree with you in general although this question is a little different. There do seem to be substantial changes for 2012 in terms of the engine. I bought the 2011 specifically because the 8 speed with more HP didn't seem worth the increase in MSRP for me and I love the way the car is structured now. Granted I bought the 3.8 but I think the logic still applies.

based on the Ward's Engine list, the 5.0 must be available in dealers by end of Q1 2011. So if you can wait 3 months you will be able to get the 5.0 (price unknown) or a likely greatly discounted new 4.6 from dealer inventory...seems like either way you will win..

True enough, but there still remains the question of possible glitches with the first new model year. I think if I were interested in a 2012 I'd wait a while and see if any problems pop up. I generally keep my cars for a long time, and it's quite possible that my Genesis well be the last car I ever buy - there is nothing about it that I'm dissatisfied with.

The 2012 Genesis engine is stroked to 5L making 429hp and 375tq, tranny gets 2 more gears (8) and MSRP increases to $47K.

Although it seems that I have a lot of Lexus cars (mostly females) passing me I have not found the need to race anyone yet and if I ever do I am quite sure I will not race anyone that will win! For me this would be the only reason to wait for the 2012. My decision was already made.
