  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello,

2012 R-Spec here. Last night wife and I went for a drive. We stopped at a friends house for a while. Got back to the car and noticed that I didn't have my keys with me. Thought we were going to have to ask for a ride home. Got in the car (I left it unlocked) and sat and pushed to button, and it started. We were at least 10 miles from home. Anyone else experience this? Doesn't the key need to be in or at least near the car to start it?

Thanks,

gavenalex

Did you ever find your key or was it inadvertently dropped somewhere in care when getting out for your visit? Will car lock without key? If not, that key or second key could be somewhere in the car.

There is definitely a fob somewhere near the car. Dig around.

Did you give the second key to your wife who had it in her purse?

Get your key, close the door, and push the button on the door handle to try to lock the car. You should hear a long beep outside the car from the car's alarm. That is telling you that the car thinks there is a fob inside the car.

Car beeps when trying to lock it. However, I have looked everywhere in the car for the other fob.

So, the good news is that the car thinks that there is a key inside. It didn't just start on a whim. There really could be a key in there, or there could be a failure in a proximity sensor or the control module that sends the false positive.

1) Can you locate your second fob anywhere? If not, then I would put odds that it is in the car.

2) If you cannot locate the fob, I wonder if Hyundai has a tool that can listen and find it.

3) If you can locate your fob, then the car needs a trip to the dealer for a fix.

Thanks for your help. I have a visit with the dealer scheduled for tomorrow. I have a winkle in the chrome trim below the deck lid and the paint is peeling from the black insert below the front headlights. I'll have them check out this starting issue as well.

There was a similar post regarding an Equus this Spring. I never did hear the end of the story but I do agree with some others that there is another fob in or possibly outside the car. The 1st place under the seats then assume nothing when looking everywhere.

Let us know the end result....we may end up there ourselves someday.

Curiouser and curiouser...... did you buy the Genny new or used and how many keys did you get with her? If in fact a spare key has been in her from day one when you start the car and get out of her to say get the mail and close the door behind you does an alarm tone sound to tell you the key has left the car yet she is still running? Also if a key has been in her all this time it would be impossible to ever lock the car (externally) as the same warning alarm would sound indicating a key inside the car.

If a fob is inside the car, you can lock the car externally with the remote lock button on the fob. But, you cannot lock with the button on the door handle.

Learn something everyday. Thx Captn.

Wife's fob was between the seat and the center console. Go figure. Must of been there for months as she never drives the car.

Thanks again!

Now you know why your wife never drives the car. She was probably afraid to tell you that she lost the key.

Ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding....we have a winner!
