  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Since my new 2018 G80, has a safety feature, where the transmission is returned to park when the door is opened, how is one to get through a car wash, where they require the engine off and car in neutral? I find nothing on Google on this. There must be a work around for this. Any help appreciateed.

Option 1: You put the car on the car wash' rails, turn off the engine, then push the start/stop button once without depressing the brake pedal to switch from OFF to ACC position. Place the shift lever in N (Neutral). You can step out.
Option 2: You stay in the car while it's being washed. Pushing the start/stop button to turn the engine off with the gear being in Neutral shouldn't switch the gear to Park automatically.

"switch from OFF to ACC position. Place the shift lever in N (Neutral)."

You can't shift out of park, in ACC position, with the engine off. 2018 G80 3.8 Ultimate

I tried placing the car in N, turning engine off than going to ACC. At this point the car is still in N, however reverts to park whenever a door is opened.

Perhaps the ride along idea is the only thing that will work however the car wash I go to doesn't allow anyone in the car.

The dealer told me the following however likewise doesn't work on my car. Perhaps it will on others.

Start car with foot on brake and place in drive momentarily (keeping foot on brake) switch to N. Shut off engine (with foot still on brake)Exit car and it will remain in N. Like I say doesn't work on my car.

Find a new car wash? I’ve never had to shut my car off before going through a car wash.

Nor have I, but I've not seen the type of car wash he is talking about for 40 years here in New England. In the south they still have some that you get out of the car and they even clean the windows inside. Then they dry the outside. The ones where you sit in the car do a decent job on the exterior, but you still have the inside windows that I hate to do.

It's all about the touchless carwash now, they do a good enough job.

Most of the car washes around here require you to not be in the car. Maybe the difficulty in putting the car in neutral is Hyundai's way of ensuring that you wash by hand. :)

The car wash I go to requires you to get out so they can clean the interior. They put the car in neutral and leave it running till they park it at the other end. Luckily mine is a 2017 with a good ol' PRND shifter. I don't understand why they had to change this, must be the drive to think up new things. Oh well, it won't be long before all the controls are just a memory anyway.

Working on a solution

Also with the change there is no more true manual mode it seems. I can flip my gear lever into manual on my 15, and it will stay until I bump it back to D. With shift by wire I can use the paddles but it eventually just goes to D by itself.

Well, I found out the answer but it isn't a good one. On the 2018 G80, PARK is not on the gear selector, it is a separate button. The operator depresses the button, to go to park or it is activated by remote sensors, ie when a door is opened. The only way around it is a small retangular box next to the Park button with a small slot in it. You need to pry off this cover, beneath it is a button. Step on the brake and depress this button and it will remain in neutral untill the process is repeated. This is actually for tow truck personal, should the vehicle have to be towed. It would work at a car wash too but isn't actually designed for regular use at a car wash. Had I known the car could not be run through my car wash, I likely would not have bought it. My car wash does not allow the car to have the engine running or have anyone in the car.

My car wash vacuums the inside and the trunk. Cleans all inside surfaces including the windows Then, at the end of the wash, they hand dry all exterior surfaces. Fun to watch, at times 5 people working on your car. They do an excellent job. Cost $10.50. I guess you are right I will need to go a different type of wash:(

The car wash in town only does the exterior. Cheap basic is $12 but you can go up to $20 with wax, wheel dressing, etc. I can see why you'd be disappointed.

Talked to the car wash they have changed their rules, they now allow the cars to go through in N with the engine running, they put the flashers on in those cars, so they can tell which ones have engines running, to make it work for some newer cars. They also will have an employee ride along for other cars that may need it. Looks like it will workout after all. I wasn't looking outside the "box" turned out to be easier to get the car wash to modify their rules, rather than trying to change the car. :)
