^ This Auto News article on upcoming Kia products cites a fastback EV for 2027.

So, it will arrive at the end of Kia's revised EV lineup timeline, which is smart as they are first concentrating on more in-demand bodystyles - CUVs, SUVs and pickups.

Again, the Stinger death prediction was wrong with regard to the timeline, but was correct in that the reason for it was the need to secure additional production capacity for the Carnival hybrid.

^ This Auto News article on upcoming Kia products cites a fastback EV for 2027.

It says "by 2027"- which means it may come anytime before then. And even then, this list is missing a lot of vehicles since Kia announced they would be launching at least two new EV's every year.

The Stinger was also a compact fastback sedan, not a midsize like an Audi A7, so whatever that vehicle is may not be analogous to the Stinger. Not so coincidentally, 2027 just happens to be the year that the next-gen G80 gets launched as BEV-only.

Again, the Stinger death prediction was wrong with regard to the timeline, but was correct in that the reason for it was the need to secure additional production capacity for the Carnival hybrid.
It was wrong to say that it was cancelled, period. A 6-year run is the industry standard for any generation of vehicle and the Stinger lived a full life cycle.

^ Doubt that it comes before the other models with earlier timelines, so if it does end up coming earlier, won't be that much earlier - o still a long time for the G70 to go w/o any additional updates.

Stinger is not a "compact" - it's 190" long, a lot closer to the 5er (194") than to the G70 (184"), so, it's at least a tweener.

Plus, the Euros consider something this size as "midsize" (something the size of the G80 would be considered "full-size" by the Euros).

Regardless what size, a fastback, correctly, should be on the latter end of importance for vehicle development/lineup fulfillment as the bodystyle is not popular in NA, and even less so in Korea (hence, leading credence to its later stage timeline).

Like I've stated, Kia would be far better off getting to market the BEV CUVs, SUVs and pickups first.

Also, since Europe is the best market for fastbacks (still, not as popular as sedans), doubt Kia would go for something too much larger, if at all, than the Stinger (esp as there's much better packaging w/ the BEV platform), as that would entail higher prices and Kia would be looking for some volume for a bodystyle not prone in achieving volume sales.

It was wrong to say that it was cancelled, period. A 6-year run is the industry standard for any generation of vehicle and the Stinger lived a full life cycle.

You're reading too much into it.

The Stinger, ultimately, did get discontinued/canceled (never bought into the idea that the Stinger was going to get canceled before Kia got some use out of its refresh).

The nameplate is NOT continuing.

Now, we may very well see the nameplate revived with the upcoming EV fastback, but Kia may also decide to stick with its EV nomenclature.

All good and insightful responses. Thanks to everyone for a respectful debate. As a 22 year car/motorcycle forum junkie I appreciate that.

Backslap, I have had two A7s. Not at all a midsize in my opinion. I would give that to the S5 Sportback.

My first

While the G70 and BMW G20 is of the same age roughly, the G20 has better tech especially safety and autonomous driving capabilities.
Backup Assistant
Park Assistance
Lane Change Assistance
Driving Assistance (similar to HDA2)
Driving Assistance Plus (under 60kmh in traffic situations with full hand off driving)

Plus the fuel efficiency is in another planet compared to the G70!

You are not wrong however here in Canada the M340 is about $25k more. And to me it's not a $25k better car.

Maybe a $10k difference.

Yeah I paid 90k CAD taxes in.
But I have zero regrets. My G70 served me well for 4+ years. This M340i is a totally different level!
Power delivery, drivetrain, comfort, technology.
We did a 2,000km round trip from SW Ontario to Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa, and back and it was amazing. My G70 would have cause me a lot of discomfort with those Nappa leather seats.
Plus my almost 14 year old who sat behind me didn’t complain once about lack of legroom. My kids hated the back seat of the G70.

The downside now is that people want to race me now 😒

Cars improve. The G70 went to into production in 2017, so I'm not surprised. Good for you and glad you are not only enjoying the M340i but also appreciated what you had with the G70. It's nice to hear objective feedback.

Thanks for sharing

The G20 was released in October 2018 and the M340i in 2019. As far as I know, the only update they made to it is the 48v Mild Hybrid introduction in the 2021 model onwards.
The LCI only changed the dashboard with curved display, front and rear bumpers, and headlights.
There are a couple of implementations from the G70 I wish the M340i had but unfortunately you can’t have it all.

Sure but the 3 series has been around a long time. Several generations of refinement.

Lol. That is why I prefer sleepers. And yea, at my and my wife's heights, 6'4" and 5'10" in our socks, none is sitting back there. It's a couple with door access for back area storage. 😂

That M badge is an invitation for tuner boys 😉

The BMW's do have a level of refinement above the G series, hence the G hasn't displaced them.

Congrats on the M340! Excellent choice.

Yes and it shows. Funnily enough, the doors are easy to swing and tinny compared to the G70. The G70 doors feel more solid. But the interior is way quieter. Like eerily quiet!

The BMW is like 2" longer, but enough to make a difference, apparently. We like it small, but it's a hindrance against the competition, and probably the reason it doesn't sell well. And it feels dated, to be honest. Not a BMW fan (I owned an M3 V8), but German vehicles tend to be more refined, although staid.

1.4” longer but narrower slightly than the G70. You can’t tell cause the interior feels just as wide maybe slightly wider.
Just packaged better for space on the inside.

What I hated about my ex-E92 M3 (which I had to buy blindly, because nobody had them) is it felt like I was driving a freaking minivan, even with the seat all the way down. It just didn't feel like a sports car. I bought it in Las Vegas, so had to drive it home (and break it in for) 700+ miles. I also HATED the freaking manual transmission was geared ultra short, even in 6th gear, screaming at 3K rpm at barely 70 mph. And it drank gas like a MoFo, even driven sedately. But at 80, and nearly 3,500 rpm, it gave me around 16 mpg, and with a paltry fuel tank, had to stop for fuel like on my motorcycle. Ha ha. When I learned it was affected by bad main bearings, and was most likely going to need a new block, I just sold it, and no BMW since then. The G70 feels a lot more sporty from the driver's seat, and I like that. But it needs improving in many other areas.

Not sure why you’re comparing a non relevant model to the current model of G70 and the 3 series.
That’s like saying me 2006 Elantra was shit so I’ll never buy another Korean vehicle again!

We have people here apparently selling thier cars due to bad service experiences. Someone judging a car brand on past experience seems no different.

I've never owned a Fiat. I just sold them. Would never buy one. Same with VW's and Land Rover's.

Yeah but this thread is comparing specific models.
Based on your logic, everyone with subpar dealership experience should never own that brand again.
Which would mean 1/2 of the current Genesis owners stateside since there doesn’t seem to be consistency in the dealership experience unlike here in Canada.
