  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Catalytic Converter fuel sytem cleaner

Is it ok to use an additive like BoostUp Catalytic Converter cleaner in our GDI 3.8 engines?
I've heard yes and no. Any consensus here?

:welcome: to the forums.

I use Top-Tier Fuels (yes it's a thing) in all my cars and I keep up with maintenance including periodic checks of fuel trims, so I've never had a carbon buildup problem or issue with a catalytic converter in cars I've owned, including my 230kmi Solara purchased new in 2006 still going strong with 100% original fuel and exhaust system. Likewise I never had a fuel, carbon, or exhaust issue with my 3 Genesis sedans while I owned them (albeit all were 4.6 PFI engines).

If I got a P0420 in the Solara or any other of my vehicles, first thing I'd verify is the fuel trims and fix what's wrong as appropriate. Once that's sorted, I'd probably go with a more known-to-me-brands like CRC Guaranteed to Pass or Cataclean to cook off any carbon out of the cats.

But feel free to try Boost Up if that's your choice, and please report back your findings to benefit our community! I've read positive anecdotes from folks using these kinds of products to successfully clear P0420s and pass emissions. Your mileage may vary.
