  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So I decided to attempt a DIY Ceramic Coating.
I bought the AvalonKing Armor Shield iX in June but finally got around to getting it done over the weekend.
Since my car had already gone through a whole winter season and I already had Silver Wax Double Polymer Sealant applied in the end of May, I knew I had to do some massive prep work!
The G70 was already fairly clean thankfully.

Prep steps:
  1. Sonax Fallout Remover
  2. Rinse
  3. Foam cannon with Turtle Wax Max Power mixed with Dawn Dish Detergent
  4. Rinse
  5. Second round of foam cannon with Turtle Wax Max Power mixed with Dawn Dish Detergent
  6. Scrubbed wheels and grille
  7. Rinse
  8. 2 Bucket wash with Turtle Wax Max Power
  9. Rinse
  10. Third round of foam cannon but this time with Chemical Guys Honeydew and Turtle Wax Max Power
  11. Clay bar
  12. Rinse
  13. Towel dry
  14. Paint correction
  15. Wet sand
  16. Polish with Meguiar's Ultimate Polish and Random Orbital Polisher
  17. IPA wipedown
  18. Ceramic Coating one panel at a time and buff off
Unfortunately by the time I got started on the Ceramic coating part, it was around 11:00 pm and I was working with just the garage light.
When I looked at it the next day, there were some spots under the coating that were matte and slightly scuffed because of the wet sanding on the touch-up spots that didn't go away with extensive polishing. Probably needed compounding first. Especially on the hood and the driver side fender. Initially I was just going to let it be and forget about it, but on Monday morning, after about 36 hours of curing, my OCD got the better of me and I decided to fix those spots.

I did the following:
  1. Lightly wet sanded those spots again with 3,000 grit sandpaper
  2. Used Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and Random Orbital Polisher
  3. Polished again with Meguiar's Ultimate Polish and Random Orbital Polisher
  4. IPA wipedown
  5. Recoated the affected areas again and buffed off
Anyway, long story short, if you're gonna DIY, do it as soon as you get the car and not almost 10 months after like me.
The prep work is killer but so far the water seems to be beading off really nice in the rain today!

Your OCD is bigger than mine (too many passes with the foam cannon IMO) many soaps like CG honeydew are too gentle with previous wax coats and you are claying and polishing anyway and that will eliminate any previous coats, but I agree 100% that paint preparation/correction is the key for a good coating. Picture please?

Yeah that's why I used Honeydew on the last pass. The first 2 passes were with Dawn and Max Power undiluted. I didn't want to hand wash with Dawn just in case it was too strong with the rubber and plastics!

It is nice beading. I got tired out just reading what you did though.
Yeah it's too much. Would not have had to do so much if my Paint Sealant wasn't that fresh!

Too much work for me for a car. I just run it through the tunnel car washes and call it good.
