  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2009 Hyundai Genesis sedan 4.6. Sounds dumb, but I plugged my obd scanner cable into the port, then went to plug it into my scanner and it arked just the smallest spark, after that my scanner wouldn’t come on, I checked fuses and found a security fuse blown I replaced it, my obd scanner came on, but I went to start the car and check steering wheel lock popped up on the dash, my car will not start, the break lights do not work, I’ve checked every single fuse inside and outside of the car and they’re all good, what could have possibly happened? I am stumped on this, I’m generally good a finding issues but I cannot figure this out

The little magic spark got out. That spark is the magic that keeps the car working, and you have to keep it inside the electronics and wiring. If it gets out, your car will not work properly. Simple really.

But seriously, that arc was bad. "Stuff" gets "fried" (translation: computer modules and wiring are often damaged) when you get arcflash in a car. Arcs are almost always caused by shorts (thx cpt. obv.). Probably a harness issue, rat chewed wires, corrosion, water intrusion, storm damage, etc. You'll want to verify with a proper diagnosis before firing the parts cannon. You're going to need a good automotive electrician with a Hyundai GDS-capable scan tool. Find the best automotive electrician in your area, and pay them well.

Well I got the car to stopped saying check steering wheel lock by unplugging the battery for a bit, but now when I press the start button it just says press button again to start, but none of my accessories like the radio unit are working, and break lights still don’t work, I’m hoping it’s not something that serious. I can’t afford to pay a tech thousands lol

any update on this? I'm having a similar issue. They have replaced my PDU (Power Distribution Unit) which had failed, but now they are saying the Steering Column Lock Module is the culprit ... and likely caused the PDU to fail. This is an independent mechanic that I trust.

well I finally got my car back today ... I got a Steering Column Lock Module from Korea. Both of the parts were updated versions of the original parts. It's been running as expected, but I was without it for 7 weeks ... waiting on parts was the main culprit. Parts cost was just under $400 USD (eBay); if I got them from the dealer it would've been $1800 USD and no faster. Labour was $900 USD. Overall it's a small price to pay to get another year or two out of it :).

Unfortunately, sometimes that's how electronic problems end up happening. One problem ends up causing another (or more than one) problem, and the diagnostics to figure out the original problem/problem causer can be a real challenge. Glad yours is back up and running.
