  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I just finished cleaning the soot off of my rear bumper with a cleaner wax. I would like to clean the tail pipes from the soot also. What is the best stuff to use to do this? The cleaner wax had little or no effect.

I would think Flitz would do the job.

^ That has been recommended most of the time. I tried regular metal polish and that turned out terrible as it clung to the carbon...didn't break it down.

Some 00 steel wool works great to break down the build-up. You can then get the remaining residue or stain off with a spray detailer or soap and water. To maintain, simply go over them (last) when you wash the car.

Nevr Dull
Put on a coat of Collinite and the soot just washes right off.
Switching to Pennzoil Ultimate also greatly reduced soot.

I just wipe it with a rag every three weeks, and it comes right off. I've been doing that ever since I got the car, and it just wipes off. Maybe it's like brake dust. The longer you let it sit, the harder it is to get it off.

Mine is caked on, badly. I have a mothers powerball that I am going to hook up to an electric pistol drill to see if I can do something about this buildup

Use steel wool. That PowerBall will basically do nothing to get the caked on stuff off, and the ball will be ruined.

It comes of pretty easily with steel will and soapy water.

Powerball + metal polish + electric pistol drill = some clean clean tailpipes.

They shine like a mirror now. I used steel wool on some of the edges the ball couldnt get. Worked so well.

I wipe them down frequently now though lol

Nice! I'm glad the poweball worked out. I always try to wipe them down when I fill up at the gas station. They have those nice coarse brown paper towels :)

Klasse is amazing to get soot off of the paint. I use it on my wife's BWM. The tail pipe drips black soot onto her white paint. Klasse wipes it right off. It works on the tail pipe chrome too!

They also have these handy squeegees with handles on them! ;-)

I use NEVR DULL and some elbow grease and then some long lasting polish like NU FINISH.
