  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My red airbag warning light came on and stayed on. The dealer ordered a new "clockspring" and installed it. The malfunction happened on my 2012 Genesis at 5 months and 2,800 miles.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

I do not remember the mileage but my 2012 Sedan started making a scratching noise when turning the steering wheel and it turned out to be the clock spring. I did not get a warning light. Now I believe it is broken again and I am at 8500 miles.

My Air Bag Warning light came on and stayed on AGAIN yesterday. This the THIRD time in less than 5,400 miles this has happened. The "clock spring" has already been replaced twice.

Am I the only Genesis owner in the U.S. with the seemingly unfixable issue??

I'm sure you are not the only one. I have had the scratching noise when I turn my steering for the last 5-000 mile, and I believe it is same problem you mention, but so far the dealership techs insists it is "normal" (even though it didn't happen for the first 25 thousand miles). It is too hard to make them understand...

The tech told me he couldn't here it this last time. I guess I'll just wait until the airbag light comes on.

LARGE UPDATE: After 6 trips to Hyundai on the air bag warning light issue, and after too many parts replaced to mention, Hyundai agreed to buy back my Genesis since they could not fix the problem. I settled with them in July by accepting their very fair offer to buy it back. It had only 5,200 miles on it and we loved the car but it was in the shop every month. It got to the point that we could not trust the car to drive it out of town as we knew the air bag warning light would come back on. The Genesis loaner we had (for 7 weeks) also had electrical issues so we were not interested in getting into another one. Hyundai was very fair in dealing with us once we filed our lemon law action. It is really a shame as it was the nicest car we had ever owned. I have nothing but nice things to say about the local Hyundai service department in trying to fix this issue. It was our first Hyundai vehicle and it probably will be our last.

Sorry to see ya go. Well, there are some lemons. What was the problem with the loaner car?

Just a quick note to say that the April Consumer Reports magazine is now showing the 2012 Genesis sedan as a "used car to avoid." Sounds like I was not the only one to have multiple issues.

What perfect car do you own now, Swami?

I think that was mainly due to 5.0 V8 oil consumption problems. I would not shy away from the 2012 3.8 based on reliability issues.

Going back in for my 4th clock spring replacement on my 2013 Genesis in the two years since I bought it used.

when your clock spring went bad. Did your buttons on the steering wheel stop working?

2011 genesis 3.8 Sedan. Dealer stated my clock spring went out, but the light came on when I replaced the stereo. My buttons on my steering wheel also stop working from time to time. Not sure if its connected.
