Our Genesis is a 2010 Tau V8 with about 5500 miles. The last couple of days it has developed a little bit of what sounds like a lifter "tick" for a few seconds when I start it. Not good.
I checked the oil and it was on the mark. It was changed about 2k miles ago.
Yesterday, I started it and the tick was louder and went on for several seconds. Next start, after about six hours, the clicking lasted for about 30 seconds before it finally smoothed out. REALLY NOT GOOD!
This morning when I started it, the noise was a little less severe and didn't last quite as long.
I want to get another few days of symptoms before I take it in for service and would also like to hear from anyone else who has had any similar symptoms from their V8? Also, does anyone know of any other mechanisms or parts in this engine that could produce a similar symptom? TIA.
1. Whenever I start my car, I also get the "ticking" for just about one or two seconds. Sounds worse when it has not been driven since the previous day, HOWEVER, starting the car in the garage, causes any engine noise to bounce off the walls of the garage, and it sounds worse than it really is.
2. You said you changed the oil 2000 miles ago. Did you change it yourself, or did your dealer change it, or did an independent garage or a "Quick Lube" change it? Reason I ask is that you may have the wrong oil in your car!
Just because someone changed it, (including dealers) does not mean that it is the correct oil. It may be that they used a "thicker" oil than what is called for. I always bring my own Full Synthetic Oil to my dealer and have them change it. (Because I'm bringing my own oil, I just pay them for the factory filter and their labor). Your car calls for 5W-20. Also 5W-30 and 10W-30 may be used, but 5W-20 is best. I never allow a dealer, independent garage, or a "quick lube" place to use Bulk Oil. I always insist on oil from a bottle, even if it costs me more.
3. Last winter, I went out to Roswell, and I had thicker oil in my car. When I stayed overnight in Bridgeport TX, started up the next morning with temperatures around 25F, my engine was noisy for a minute or so. In Roswell, next morning, with temperature at 11F, started car, and it was noisy for five minutes. Went right out and got the oil changed to 5W-20 and the rest of my visit, even though the temperatures were cold, the engine noise only lasted a few seconds.
Here in the HOT HOT Florida Summer Temperatures, (95F to 102F since the end of April), I am presently using 10W-30 but when it cools down to our Florida Winter Temperature, I will switch to either 5W-30 or 5W-20. If I have to make an emergency trip to Penfield in the winter, or go back out to Roswell in the Winter, I will make sure I have 5W-20, full synthetic.
BTW, the reason I will not allow anyone to fill with oil from bulk, is because :
1. Not only don't I know what is in that bulk container, but also;
2. Dealers don't know what is in that bulk container.
Sure, I have to trust my dealer, or garage, or quick lube place, assuming they are honest, but also, they have to trust their jobber, and it is too easy to have the wrong oil in their bulk containers. In addition, some dealers or garages or quick lube places are not honest. If I don't bring my own Full Synthetic, and buy from them, I want to see the bottles, and will watch when they change the oil and filter! (That is what I did last winter in Roswell).
If your clicking is lasting more than 1 or two (five at the most) seconds, and you are using the correct oil, you are correct. REALLY NOT GOOD! Something is wrong! Get it checked.
