  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
    If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello
While looking for a 'good' car, came across Genesis G70 which caught my attention. I am seriously considering this, however, the Hyundai/Kia backing concerns me little. I am in North America and my prior experience (in 90s) with Hyundai is not great. What is the general opinion of the members on this forum? Specifically on G70, can any long-insh term owners share their experience about:
* General maintenance and breakdown
* After sales services
* Any other perception/experience

Thanks for helping me make an informed decision.

This is not 1990. Back then I'd have agreed with you and snicker when I saw people actually buying Hyundai/Kia. Things have changed.

One day I saw a nice looking sedan. Turned out to be a 2006 Sonata, a new body style. I liked it. Some month later I was in the market for a new car and was fed up with GM, thought Toyota was OK, then someone mentioned having a Hyundai as a rental and really liked it so I checked them out.

I ended up buying a 2007 Sonata, then 2010, then 2013. I had a Genesis loaner one day, liked it and later bought a 2015 and now have a 2018 G80.

Reliability is far better than any other brand I've owned. The dealers I used have been good, but like any franchise, some are not as good as others. I moved recently and used a new to me dealer for routine service and was very satisfied with them too.

While at the dealer I did look at the G70. My needs are better met with the G80, but I'd not hesitate to buy a G70. Take a close look at the fit and finish and it is better than any GM car I ever had. Of the 5 cars I had, two did have to go to the dealer for minor warranty repair, the others never had to. I did use roadside service twice for tire related problems and it was ok too. Best bang for the buck in the auto industry, IMO, and very reliable. Have not been let down ever in over a quarter million miles.

Ed certainly covers it off well. I can add a few other things to the mix. I had a 2013 Santa Fe Sport that had a number of issues over the 5+ years that I owned it, however, so did many of the previous cars that I have bought or leased new. One thing I will say that they did is actually took care of the issues that arose. I had to end up dumping a Ford Escape early to get the Santa Fe because of transmission troubles that Ford was simply ignoring. If I go even further (much) back I had a late 80's Excel that I literally hated. But I was a teenager and I ended up with this car when I wanted something, anything, else. I ran that car into the ground, took it into the mountains, beat on it, essentially rally raced it and in spite of it having obvious issues from my mistreatment the car kept going. Yeah it wasn't the best car going but I traded it in after 3 years with a broken shock tower and 20% brakes on the front and 0% on the rear and I ran the motor out of oil once and the damn thing kept going.

Personal experience aside the brands are both well regarded for reliability these days, that's easy enough to see in the press. They are by far value leaders and if you go into the review thread it's worth the long slog of 40+ pages. The last bit of the thread the car of the year awards that the G70 has been piling up have also been inhabited by Hyundai and Kia models. They are doing some great work and it's being recognized. I believe too they have JD Power or Consumer Reports, can't remember which, ratings for initial quality. Their crash test ratings are great and quite frankly for my G70 I don't know that I've owned a better put together car. Maybe my one Audi would be the closest I had but I'd take the G70 over the S3 I had any day while saving myself 8 grand.

I haven't had to deal with any post service items yet but with how they have their warranty and servicing options I'm not worried at all and I live well away time wise from a dealership. As Ed says your milage may very with dealer to dealer experiences, just like it does at any other brand. The team I dealt with during my purchase was great though and I have to say it was the best car shopping experience I've had and I've owned more than 20 cars used and new.
