  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I replaced my Dunlop's with these tires within a week of getting my '11 4.6, and really like them. I was hoping someone had some experience with how these tires perform in the ice and snow. I was planning on getting some dedicated winter tires, but the guy I talked with at Discount Tire told me that a number of customers with the DWS all seasons liked them well enough in the Winter that didn't bother swapping them out.

Anyone have personal experience they'd be willing to share?

check the surveys for the tire on Tirerack.com I think the tires are rated as doing fairly well in snow.

consumer reports rates the snow traction and ice braking as "good."
did you notice a difference in ride comfort and noise when you replaced the dunlops?
i am still quite happy with my dunlops at 3000 miles.
interestingly, consumer reports rates the DWS as merely good for noise and comfort, like many other tires. the higher rated ones are "very good" and "excellent."

Warning: Pure Opinion.

I just talked this evening with a guy with a Pontiac G8 ( Corvette engine, rwd, for those who may not know) who has this exact set of 4 tires.

He said that he thought this tire was great for winter here in MN compared to the summer tires he had when he first bought the car just a year ago.

From his perspective, this is not a (< 0 degree) true snow tire but for the days when he needed to get to work on plowed roads these treated him well. He travels on city roads 5 miles each way for work.

He said that he has had straight snow tires in the past and hasn't liked them wearing out so fast here in MN. Again, this is just what he told me.

Warning: Personal perspective:

While I appreciate my friend's advice, I plan to buy true snow tires and wheels because I hated last winter. I didn't have a Genesis, but I had a 2002 Acura TL that was simply all over the place and absolutely hated it, and last winter here was really bad.

I have no personal experience with snow tires, but everything I've read says that this is the way to go where I live. So I plan to give it a shot. YMMV.

My 2 cents.

Jim:

Great perspective. I'm on the fence about getting true snow tires for my R spec. Last winter was indeed brutal.

Hard for me to answer this since I had the tires replaced within the first 200 miles. I leased the car, so I decided to replace the Dunlops immediately and drive on better rated tires, and then put the Dunlops back on at the end of the lease (they are sitting in my basement). I did notice an improvement in ride. I didn't think the Dunlops were particularly noisy, but I didn't have them that long.

Thanks Jim. That's my fear as well. I actually work from a home office, so I rarely HAVE to drive in the bad weather. That being said, my driveway is on a slight incline, and I have had some interesting experiences getting my car back in the garage after mother nature lays down a sheet of ice. Previous car was an Infiniti G35x, and the "x" was needed on a number of occasions.

I have used the conti extreme DWS on all my cars since they first came out
they are excellent - the very best for an all season tire

Drove them through an ice storm here in New Jersey last winter
44 miles ONE WAY to work and back again in the evening

The tires were absolutely awesome -

I've also owned the Pirelli 240 Sottozero winter sport for the E60 M5

the only real difference I noticed was this :

From a stand still on ice - the Extreme dws struggled quite a bit to get traction - the traction control light flickering constantly- tires slipping

the winter tires did better in this regard -

Superb tire- just put a set on my 2008 CLK Cabriolet and they are smooth quite and have a great tread pattern and the sidewall isn't bad either.

On my second stock Dunlops (I use snows on all corners Nov-March) and when it is time- Conti-Extremes will be purchased for the Genesis.

I have been running the DWS tires since my original Dunlops wore out and probably have about 15,000 miles on them. The ride is definitely improved. I only use them in the summer as I have a full set of winter tires on seperate rims, but I did run the DWS through a couple of unexpected snow falls last winter and the traction was definitely better than expected. The 'winter' tread does wear quite quickly as you would expect and I still don't think I'd want to use them year-round in our climate here in eastern Canada. The grip in the dry and steering turn-in isn't as good as the Dunlops (at least when they were newer) but certainly not bad by any means.
