  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Just picked up this car from Carmax about a month ago. Been noticing a burning coolant smell recently. Popped the hood and saw the far right reservoir was low and topped it off with distilled water. Right side is for the turbo/intercooler? See a fair amount of caked on pink spray in the engine bay, including around the alternator, which is a bit concerning. I'm assuming this is coolant.

Not sure if it's related, but it seems like I've also been getting worse MPG than normal. Before I would get around 19 MPG driving on local roads, now I'm down to only 16.6 MPG with similar driving behavior. Also seems like "Coasting" isn't auto-enabling as often as it was before too.

Three questions:
  1. Anything I should look for in terms of source of the leak? I don't see any obvious hoses that are cracked or not attached.
  2. Is this common?
  3. The local Genesis dealer doesn't have appointments available until over 2 months from now, which seems insane. Plus they can't guarantee a loaner will be available. I'm still waiting to hear back from another Genesis dealer that's about an hour away from here to see if they can get me in sooner. Is it common to have super long wait times for appointments?
Thanks for the info!

Coolant overfilled?
Genesis service appointment times are hit and miss, but usually are 3 to 4 weeks out at a minimum. It took over 2 months and 2 appointments to finally get my low-pressure fuel pump replaced under a recall, but I haven't needed to go back since.

Since it's only been a month, doesn't Carmax have some sort of warranty period to at least check this out for you in the meantime?

I haven't touched the small (middle) coolant tank. The right coolant tank is always low when the car is off. From what I'm seeing on the forums, it's normal and fills up once the car runs and is heated. The right tank never goes much above the full mark, so it's not like it's filling up the whole tank, but I understand there's pressure involved as well.

I did not have a coolant smell until I added distilled water to the right tank because it was below empty. Right after adding the water and going for a short drive, I noticed the smell. So it does make sense that it could be related. It kind of looks like it's coming from near the alternator. Is the water pump in that area?

How does overfill work on these cars? Is there a one way valve that opens if there is too much fluid/pressure?

RE Carmax: Yes, they do have a 90 day warranty, plus I bought their extended warranty as well. I'm waiting for a call back from them. Of the three service departments I called (2x Genesis, 1x Carmax) - none answered their phones. They all went to voicemail.

Tank on the right side is the engine coolant reservoir.
Intercooler tank is at front and center.

I'm willing to bet it had the ac evaporator replaced like we did on my wife's 22 GV70 3.5T they made a fkn mess and I keept the engine bay flawless I was not happy about it. Atleast the ac has been good for about a year now, that's really the only real issue we've had coming up on 35k miles. We did have the trim oxidation like all the new g70 and gv70s do.

It ended up being a bad water pump seal. Service said they can't replace just the seal so they replaced the entire water pump. Good as new now, although the engine bay isn't as clean as I would like and there was a residual sweet coolant smell for a week afterward.
