  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

CPO Article

Yep. My car was purchased CPO at 6,000 miles. I didn't find out till ~4 months later when I was getting misfire CEL codes that the engine had been replaced at 5,000 miles. The dealership originally claimed that they did not know, but the manager later admitted he did know. I would not have paid what I paidm or even walked away from it had they informed me of the failure.

FWIW, the dealership only sold it as CPO. They did not actually perform any checks, because there were multiple problems when the car with I bought it. I was half way home (bought it in another state) when I got my 1st CEL and none of the interior lighting worked save the gauge cluster.

The article is more an indictment of bad dealers than CPO programs in general. It should have been titled something like "Bad Dealership Can Still Scam Consumers Through CPO Programs." A bad dealer is a bad dealer, and everything they offer is tainted.

Agreed, but it is good to remember that a CPO vehicle is basically a clean late-model with a warranty. There is no guarantee that it has been well cared for or not been damaged and repaired.

Some consumers have the mistaken idea that CPO is a uniform standard in the industry that is regulated by the government. Other than any warranty portions of a CPO, it is not regulated by the government. Each manufacturer has their own set of CPO rules, and as we have found out on this forum from many members, each dealer treats the "inspection" part very differently (quite a few Hyundai dealers don't actually inspect the cars, even though they claim to).

With a Hyundai CPO, about the only thing you get is restoration of the 10 year 100K mile drivetrain warranty which is normally only available to original owners. Dealers have to pay Hyundai for including this extended manufacturer warranty with a used car, so they obviously need to charge a little extra for a CPO car. They are also going to charge you for the inspection, even if they don't do it.

Some manufacturers, such a MB, obviously take the CPO program a lot more seriously and make sure their dealers actually inspect the cars and fix any problems. But Hyundai dealers have been selling to unsophisticated customers for so long (even compared to Honda and Toyota customers) that they think they can fool most of the people most of the time. That is changing, but only slowly.

^ There have been issues w/ the German luxury makes; not every vehicle offered under their CPO program warranted being in the program.

There has been issues with people posting on this forum who are associated with Hyundai, either directly or indirectly (via someone they know very well), but who deny any such association and who are not being truthful. If you want to be a fan boy, that is your right, but must disclose any conflict of interest.
